Summary

The NodeBB forum is moving from our own nodebb-plugin-sso-oauth-faforever to the official nodebb-plugin-sso-oauth2-multiple (which includes our user lookup endpoint contribution). The API uses that endpoint to find the forum user for a FAF user id when syncing username/email changes.

This PR adds a feature flag so the API can talk to either plugin and the switch can be done via environment variables only:

Env var Default Description
NODEBB_SSO_PLUGIN LEGACY LEGACY = nodebb-plugin-sso-oauth-faforever, OAUTH2_MULTIPLE = nodebb-plugin-sso-oauth2-multiple
NODEBB_SSO_PROVIDER_NAME faf-nodebb Name of the strategy configured in the new plugin

Differences handled for OAUTH2_MULTIPLE:

  • Route: /api/v3/plugins/oauth2-multiple/provider/{provider}/user/{id} instead of /api/v3/plugins/sso/user/{id}
  • Response: wrapped by NodeBB ({"status": {...}, "response": {"userData": {"uid": ...}}}) instead of the raw user object

The default keeps the current behaviour, so merging this changes nothing until the flag is set.

Migration instructions

No data migration is needed. Both plugins store the link in the same place, as long as the new strategy is named faf-nodebb:

  • Hash faf-nodebbId:uid (FAF user id → NodeBB uid)
  • User field faf-nodebbId
  • Callback URL /auth/faf-nodebb/callback (the Hydra client registration stays unchanged)

Prerequisites

  1. The plugin version containing the lookup endpoint (/oauth2-multiple/provider/:provider/user/:oAuthId) must be installed.
  2. Hydra must issue sub = numeric FAF user id for the forum client, i.e. the client must not use subject_type: pairwise. Otherwise existing users are not found and duplicate accounts are created. Verify with a test login on staging.
  3. The userinfo endpoint (https://hydra.<domain>/userinfo) returns sub, preferred_username, email, email_verified and roles. Request scope openid email public_profile.

Steps

  1. Back up MongoDB (especially faf-nodebbId:uid and user:*).
  2. Test on staging with a copy of the production DB: deactivate the old plugin, install the new one, create the strategy faf-nodebb (auth URL, token URL, userinfo URL as user route, client id/secret, scope, trustEmailVerified, roles→groups mapping for forum admins). Log in with an existing user and an admin: the NodeBB uid must stay the same and no new user may be created.
  3. Deploy this PR with the default (NODEBB_SSO_PLUGIN=LEGACY). Nothing changes yet.
  4. Cut over (about one NodeBB restart of downtime):
    1. Deactivate nodebb-plugin-sso-oauth-faforever, activate nodebb-plugin-sso-oauth2-multiple, create the strategy faf-nodebb, restart NodeBB.
    2. Set NODEBB_SSO_PLUGIN=OAUTH2_MULTIPLE on the API and restart it.
    3. Verify: login, forum admin groups, and a username change in FAF being synced to the forum.
  5. Rollback: set NODEBB_SSO_PLUGIN=LEGACY, re-activate the old plugin and disable the strategy. The data is untouched.
  6. After a few weeks: uninstall the old plugin and remove the LEGACY code path.

Behaviour differences to be aware of

  • The old plugin made users in faf_server_administrators forum admins automatically. The new one uses the roles→groups mapping, based on the roles claim (USER + permission technical names).
  • The new plugin only falls back to e-mail matching if trustEmailVerified is enabled (Hydra always sends email_verified: true).

Testing

Not compiled or tested locally yet. Needs verification against a staging NodeBB.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added configurable NodeBB single sign-on options, including support for OAuth2 Multiple and a customizable provider name. The existing legacy option remains the default, so current sign-in behavior is preserved unless the configuration is changed. These settings let installations select the SSO mode that matches their NodeBB setup.

Add NODEBB_SSO_PLUGIN (LEGACY|OAUTH2_MULTIPLE, default LEGACY) to switch
the user lookup between nodebb-plugin-sso-oauth-faforever and
nodebb-plugin-sso-oauth2-multiple without a redeploy of the code.

📝 Walkthrough

The NodeBB configuration adds SSO plugin and provider name settings. User ID lookup selects the endpoint and response format based on the configured plugin.

Changes: NodeBB SSO plugin selection

The configuration table could mislead operators during the plugin cutover. Correct the row and document the allowed values separately; this is a bounded documentation issue.

Explanation

The title names the main change: adding support for the nodebb-plugin-sso-oauth2-multiple plugin in the NodeBB user lookup. The changeset adds the NODEBB_SSO_PLUGIN switch (LEGACY or OAUTH2_MULTIPLE), the OAuth2-multiple lookup endpoint, the wrapped LookupResponse records, and the NODEBB_SSO_PROVIDER_NAME setting. The title is specific and matches the objectives. It is 64 characters, within a concise single-sentence length.

Move the allowed values out of the dependency column.

The third column is reserved for environment-variable dependencies. LEGACY and OAUTH2_MULTIPLE are allowed values for NODEBB_SSO_PLUGIN. Leave the cell empty and list the allowed values in a separate note.
