What does this PR do?

Type of change: Bug fix

vLLM and TensorRT-LLM fuse some projection groups into one GEMM with one scale per tensor, so the export needs equal per-tensor input and weight scales within each group. ModelOpt already ties Megatron-Core MLA's linear_q_down_proj / linear_kv_down_proj at calibration (#2981). This extends the tie to the groups it misses:

  • DeepSeek-V4: linear_q_down_proj / linear_kv_proj (HF wq_a / wkv, which vLLM loads as fused_wqa_wkv).
  • Megatron-Core modules that keep HF names, e.g. Kimi K3 in Megatron-Bridge: MLA q_a_proj / kv_a_proj_with_mqa and KDA q_proj / k_proj / v_proj, each with the gates vLLM fuses into the same GEMM: MLA g_proj (fused_qkv_a_g_proj) and KDA g_proj / f_a_proj / b_proj (in_proj_qkvgfab).

Without it, a real Kimi K3 NVFP4 PTQ fails Megatron-Bridge's export check (Fused projections need equal per-tensor scales), and DeepSeek-V4 is exported with wq_a / wkv scales that differ.

Changes:

  • _sync_mla_fused_down_proj_amax → _sync_fused_projection_amax covers every group per module. The HF-named groups apply only inside a Megatron-Core MegatronModule. Plain HF models are unchanged here, since the HF export already ties ranges for linears sharing an input.
  • Static NVFP4 (SHARED_PATTERNS): the MLA pattern also matches linear_kv_proj, and a new HF_MLA_DOWN_PROJ_PATTERN groups q_a_proj / kv_a_proj_with_mqa. HF-named q/k/v were already grouped. As with q/k/v, the q_a_proj / kv_a_proj_with_mqa pattern also applies to HF DeepSeek-style models, matching what deployments fuse.
  • Checkpoints saved before the patterns were recorded still restore without either down-projection grouping.
  • Static NVFP4 for those Megatron-Core groups: SHARED_PATTERNS ties q/k/v and q_a/kv_a, but name patterns can't place g_proj (KDA fuses it with q/k/v, MLA with q_a/kv_a). Under the default patterns, _sync_fused_projection_global_amax widens them to the full fused groups after promotion, in place so the existing ties hold, and the global-range check covers them.

Testing

  • tests/unit/torch/quantization/test_shared_input.py: the MLA tests are parametrized over the MCore, DeepSeek-V4 and HF names, and the two projections now see different input ranges. New test_hf_mla_down_projections_keep_own_per_tensor_ranges: outside a MegatronModule, q_a_proj / kv_a_proj_with_mqa keep their own input and weight ranges. 27 pass; the 4 MLA cases added for DeepSeek-V4 / HF names fail on main.
  • Mutations caught: dropping linear_kv_proj from the pattern, dropping the DeepSeek-V4 pair, narrowing the restore filter, and applying the HF-named groups outside MegatronModule.
  • New GPU test test_hf_named_fused_projections_share_ranges (FP8, dynamic NVFP4, static NVFP4): a MegatronModule holding Kimi K3-style TELinear / TEColumnParallelLinear projections. It covers the MLA and KDA layouts with their gates. Passes together with test_mla_fused_down_projections_share_ranges (9 passed). An earlier version that tied only the first group per module failed it, and so do the FP8 / NVFP4 cases without the gate groups. Its static NVFP4 cases now check the global range across the gates too and fail without the new sync.
  • Kimi K3 toy in Megatron-Bridge, NVFP4 calibrated with forward passes and exported at 1 GPU and TP2: every fused group, gates included, has equal weight_scale_2 / input_scale. With static NVFP4 weights (MSE, FP8 scale sweep; 1 GPU, as static NVFP4 doesn't support TP > 1): all 14 checked weight_scale_2 / input_scale pairs, gates included, are equal; without the global-range sync, the 4 gate weight_scale_2 pairs differ.
  • New test_hf_gates_keep_own_static_nvfp4_global_ranges: outside a MegatronModule, KDA-style gates keep their own static NVFP4 global range.
  • Environment: 2× RTX 6000 Ada in nvcr.io/nvidian/nemo:26.10.rc9.
  • Not run: a real DeepSeek-V4 Megatron model on GPU. The unit test covers its names.

Before your PR is "Ready for review"

  • Is this change backward compatible?: ✅ (HF models' per-tensor ranges are unchanged, except that static NVFP4 now shares one global weight range between DeepSeek-style q_a_proj / kv_a_proj_with_mqa; older checkpoints restore as before)
  • If you copied code from any other sources or added a new PIP dependency, did you follow guidance in CONTRIBUTING.md: N/A
  • Did you write any new necessary tests?: ✅
  • Did you update Changelog?: ✅ (extended the unreleased MLA entry, including the static NVFP4 change for HF DeepSeek-style models)
  • Did you get Claude approval on this PR?: ❌

Additional Information

Found while adding Kimi K3 and DeepSeek-V4 to Megatron-Bridge's quantized-export CI (NVIDIA-NeMo/Megatron-Bridge#6770, OMNIML-5978). That test ties these ranges in its driver until Megatron-Bridge pins a ModelOpt release with this fix (OMNIML-6311).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Calibration now shares input and weight ranges across projection groups fused into a single GEMM, including supported Megatron-Core, vLLM, TensorRT-LLM, and Hugging Face projection names.
    • Static NVFP4 calibration shares a global weight range between q_a_proj and kv_a_proj_with_mqa.
    • Existing checkpoints need recalibration to use the shared ranges.

…ions that deployments fuse

vLLM fuses DeepSeek-V4's wq_a / wkv (linear_q_down_proj / linear_kv_proj) and the
MLA q_a_proj / kv_a_proj_with_mqa and q/k/v projections that Megatron-Core models such
as Kimi K3 keep under their HF names. Calibration now gives each group one per-tensor
input and weight range (static NVFP4: one global range), as it already did for MLA's
linear_q_down_proj / linear_kv_down_proj.

Projection patterns and checkpoint restore
modelopt/torch/quantization/utils/shared_input.py, modelopt/torch/quantization/conversion.py, tests/unit/torch/quantization/test_shared_input.py, CHANGELOG.rst
Shared-input patterns include additional DeepSeek-V4 and Hugging Face MLA projection names. When shared-pattern metadata is absent, checkpoint restoration excludes all configured down-projection patterns. Tests cover supported naming pairs, range behavior, and checkpoint restoration. The changelog describes the expanded cases.
Fused projection amax synchronization
modelopt/torch/quantization/model_calib.py, tests/unit/torch/quantization/test_shared_input.py, tests/gpu_megatron/torch/quantization/plugins/test_megatron.py
The generalized synchronizer handles configured projection groups during calibration finalization and MSE calibration. For static NVFP4, it also synchronizes eligible global weight ranges. Unit and GPU tests cover the synchronization behavior.

2691-2718: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Make the input ranges distinguishable before checking synchronization.

The test sends the same x to every projection, so all input ranges are identical before synchronization. Recording those ranges and asserting their maximum would still pass if input synchronization were removed. Use distinguishable pre-synchronization inputs or otherwise assign distinct input ranges to the enabled members, then assert that every member receives the maximum range computed by the calibration path. Keep the assertion scoped to enabled input quantizers.

Review: the fix is correct and its tests catch the bug; nothing blocking. Three optional nits.

Optional

  • No test for "plain HF models unchanged". Applying the HF-named groups to every module (not just inside a MegatronModule, model_calib.py:178) still passes all 25 unit tests. One extra parametrized case with q_a_proj / kv_a_proj_with_mqa names outside a MegatronModule, asserting the input ranges stay unshared, would cover it.
  • CHANGELOG scope (CHANGELOG.rst:88). The entry only mentions Megatron-Core, but adding HF_MLA_DOWN_PROJ_PATTERN to SHARED_PATTERNS also changes static-NVFP4 calibration of plain HF DeepSeek-V3 / Kimi-K2 models (q_a_proj / kv_a_proj_with_mqa now share global_amax). The PR body says so; the entry should too.
  • Assert message (model_calib.py:157-161) still says "(q/k/v or gate/up)" but now also fires for the MLA groups.

Checked, no action

  • CodeRabbit: the local TE import in the GPU test matches the existing _test_te_linear_range_sync_helper in the same file, so no change. Its "identical inputs" point is right but low value (the input tie runs the same loop as the weight tie).
  • Names match the real modules: Megatron-Core 26.10 DSv4HybridSelfAttention (linear_q_down_proj, linear_kv_proj) and Megatron-Bridge KimiK3Attention(MegatronModule) (q_a_proj / kv_a_proj_with_mqa, column-parallel q_proj / k_proj / v_proj). The MegatronModule check is on the projections' direct parent, so HF towers wrapped in Megatron models are unaffected.
  • No collectives; the tie runs after the TP/DP sync. In a scratch TP=2 DeepSeek-V4 layout, FP8 and dynamic NVFP4 give one shared value, identical on both ranks; static NVFP4 at TP>1 is refused by an existing guard.
  • Older checkpoints without recorded patterns drop both down-projection patterns (a mutation of that filter breaks restore_ungrouped[names2]); checkpoints saved on main after #2981 restore with their recorded patterns. The new patterns cannot collide with the q/k/v ones (each regex matches the whole module name). Existing MLA linear_q_down_proj / linear_kv_down_proj behavior is unchanged.
  • +49 source lines; CHANGELOG extends the unreleased 0.49.0 Bug Fixes item; no setup-owned paths touched.

Ran: test_shared_input.py 25 pass on the PR, exactly the 4 new cases fail on main. On 2x Ada (nemo:26.10), the two new GPU tests give 6 passed on the PR, and the 3 new cases fail with main's modelopt. Mutations: dropping linear_kv_proj from the pattern, dropping the DeepSeek-V4 pair and narrowing the restore filter are each caught; removing the MegatronModule check is not (first nit). Not run: a real DeepSeek-V4 or Kimi K3 model.

…on-Core

Also cover the static NVFP4 change for HF DeepSeek-style MLA models in the
CHANGELOG, and name the MLA groups in the shared-amax assert message.

Bot review (bedrock-claude-opus-5-5) — DM the bot to share feedback.

Nudge: the fused-projection tie is correct and well tested, but the PR doesn't show the Kimi K3 run that motivated it passing with the fix, and the CHANGELOG entry is longer than the two-sentence limit in AGENTS.md.

Needs action:

  • Confirm that a real Kimi K3 NVFP4 PTQ on this branch passes Megatron-Bridge's Fused projections need equal per-tensor scales check without the driver-side tie. The HF-named groups only apply when the projections' direct parent is a MegatronModule, and the GPU test checks this with a synthetic module, not the real model.
  • Trim the CHANGELOG.rst entry to two sentences, per AGENTS.md (see inline).
  • Reuse _FUSED_HF_NAMED_PROJECTIONS in _collect_grouped_linears instead of restating the tuples (see inline).

No action needed:

  • The edits to existing tests in test_shared_input.py are justified. The MLA tests are parametrized over the new names, and the dummy now feeds the two projections different input ranges, which makes the input-equality assertions stronger. No assertion is loosened.
  • Restore stays compatible. Checkpoints that recorded their patterns restore with those patterns as saved, including the old MLA regex. The path for checkpoints that recorded none drops both down-projection patterns.
  • _sync_mla_fused_down_proj_amax had only the two callers the PR renames.

No real Kimi K3 checkpoint run, but I checked the real module path: Megatron-Bridge's toy Kimi K3 (KimiK3Attention with TELinear / TEColumnParallelLinear), NVFP4 calibrated with forward passes, no driver-side tie or input pinning, exported with save_hf_pretrained_modelopt. On this branch at 1 GPU and TP2 the fused-scale check passes and q/k/v and q_a/kv_a share weight_scale_2 and input_scale; with nvidia-modelopt 0.48 the same run fails with Fused projections need equal per-tensor scales for both groups. PP and DeepSeek-V4 (needs DeepEP kernels) weren't run.

Bot review (bedrock-claude-opus-5-5) — DM the bot to share feedback.

LGTM: every earlier concern is resolved and my own pass found nothing new. A human still has to sign off on the edits to existing tests in test_shared_input.py.

Needs action:

  • Confirm the existing-test edits in tests/unit/torch/quantization/test_shared_input.py. They are justified: the MLA tests are now parametrized over the MCore, DeepSeek-V4 and HF names, and _DummyMLA now sends the two projections different input ranges, which makes the input-equality assertions stronger. No assertion is loosened or dropped.

No action needed:

  • ✔️ Resolved since the last review:
    • The real-module Kimi K3 check: the author ran Megatron-Bridge's toy KimiK3Attention. It passes the fused-scale check on this branch at 1 GPU and TP2, and fails on 0.48.
    • The CHANGELOG.rst entry is now two sentences.
    • _collect_grouped_linears now reuses _FUSED_HF_NAMED_PROJECTIONS / _FUSED_MCORE_PROJECTIONS.
    • The sys.modules comment and the assert message are updated.
  • The author's pushback on CodeRabbit holds. The local TE import matches the existing _test_te_linear_range_sync_helper, and the input tie is checked with different ranges in the unit test.
  • Single-member matches are harmless. For example, a DeepSeek-V2-Lite-style model with no q_a_proj forms no group, because find_shared_input_groups keeps only groups of two or more.
  • About 49 core-logic lines, so size is not a concern.

vLLM also merges KDA g_proj / f_a_proj / b_proj into in_proj_qkvgfab, and MLA g_proj into fused_qkv_a_g_proj. The PR doesn't tie any of these.

Pensieve nudge review using shengliangx's profile (revision 2).

Nudge: earlier fixes are visible, but the additional deployment fusion groups raised in 6645385752 remain unresolved.

Needs action:

  • Confirm scale requirements for KDA g_proj/f_a_proj/b_proj and MLA g_proj in 6645385752; provide deployment loader and quantization-selection source, then extend calibration groups and tests if these projections require shared scales.

No action needed:

  • ✔️ Prior changelog, tuple reuse, explanatory comment, assertion wording, and plain-HF regression concerns are addressed in the current diff.
  • Existing-test edits are justified: parametrization expands naming coverage, differing inputs strengthen synchronization assertions, and existing assertions remain.
  • The supplied 37 core additions are under budget. No licensing changes appear. The local-import discussion was settled; no new evidence warrants reopening it.
  • Baseline commit: e481d487570a1ad13092d88be900ba8d985ce850. Base AGENTS.md and CONTRIBUTING.md were unavailable. Missing deployment source prevents assessing the additional fused-scale risk.
  • Review and duplicate checking cover bounded source/history; some review bodies are empty. Existing concerns are referenced rather than duplicated. Tests were not executed; runtime results are author-reported and independent CI results were unavailable.

@sychen52 Good catch, thanks. vLLM's Kimi K3 loader packs q/k/v/g/f_a/b_proj into in_proj_qkvgfab and q_a_proj/kv_a_proj_with_mqa/g_proj into fused_qkv_a_g_proj, and its ModelOpt NVFP4 linear takes the max weight_scale_2/input_scale across shards. Fixed in 1d049fe: Megatron-Core modules now share per-tensor input and weight ranges across both gated groups. The GPU test covers the MLA and KDA layouts. A Kimi K3 toy calibrated with forward passes and exported through Megatron-Bridge now has equal scales for all of them. Static NVFP4 still shares the weight global range only within q/k/v and q_a/kv_a; extending it to the gates needs a different grouping than the name regexes and is tracked in OMNIML-6311.

Pensieve nudge review using shengliangx's profile (revision 2).

Nudge: per-tensor gate synchronization is addressed, but static NVFP4 compatibility remains unresolved in the existing fusion discussion.

Needs action:

  • 💬 Reply 6654750731 defers static NVFP4 gate grouping to OMNIML-6311; provide loader and quantization-selection source establishing that differing gate global ranges are safe, or extend sharing and tests before closing 6645385752.

No action needed:

  • ✔️ The new gated groups and GPU weight-range assertions address the per-tensor portion of the prior concern. Earlier changelog, tuple-reuse, explanatory-comment, assertion-wording, and plain-HF regression fixes remain visible.
  • Static NVFP4 assertions deliberately cover only core projections, leaving gate compatibility unestablished. The reported export passes are author-provided evidence.
  • Existing-test edits are justified: naming coverage expands, differing inputs strengthen synchronization checks, and assertions remain. The supplied 41 core additions are under budget; no licensing changes appear. The settled local-import discussion is not reopened.
  • Baseline commit: e481d487570a1ad13092d88be900ba8d985ce850. Base AGENTS.md and CONTRIBUTING.md were unavailable. Review and duplicate checking cover bounded source/history; some review bodies are empty. Tests were not executed; independent CI results were unavailable.

Bot review (bedrock-claude-opus-5-5) — DM the bot to share feedback.

LGTM: every earlier concern is resolved, including the Kimi K3 gate groups, and my own pass found nothing new. A human still has to sign off on the edits to existing tests.

Needs action:

  • Confirm the existing-test edits in tests/unit/torch/quantization/test_shared_input.py. I think they're justified. The MLA tests are now parametrized over the MCore, DeepSeek-V4 and HF names. _DummyMLA now gives the two projections different input ranges, which makes the input-equality assertions stronger. Its defaults keep the sequential-quantizer test as it was, and no assertion is loosened.

No action needed:

  • ✔️ Resolved since the last review: the KDA g_proj/f_a_proj/b_proj and MLA g_proj groups (_FUSED_HF_NAMED_GATED_PROJECTIONS, covered by the GPU test). The changelog entry, the tuple reuse, the sys.modules comment and the assert message were fixed earlier.
  • The author's pushback on CodeRabbit holds. The local TE import matches _test_te_linear_range_sync_helper. Inputs and weights are tied by the same loop, and the unit test checks the input tie with different ranges.
  • If one member's quantizer is disabled or isn't per-tensor, _sync_fused_projection_amax skips the gated superset but still ties the core group. That fallback is safe.
  • Size is not a concern: about 50 lines of core logic.

…s too

vLLM's ModelOpt NVFP4 linear takes the max weight_scale_2 across the shards
it fuses, so g_proj / f_a_proj / b_proj need the same global range as the
projections they are fused with. Name patterns can't group g_proj (KDA fuses
it with q/k/v, MLA with q_a/kv_a), so widen the Megatron-Core fused groups
after promotion, under the default patterns, and check them there.

Differing gate global ranges aren't safe: vLLM's ModelOpt NVFP4 linear takes the max weight_scale_2 across the fused shards. So instead of deferring it, 358ab42 shares it here. After promotion, static NVFP4 weights of the Megatron-Core fused groups, gates included, get one global range, and the global-range check covers those groups. Name patterns can't do this, since KDA fuses g_proj with q/k/v and MLA with q_a/kv_a. The GPU test checks the gates in both layouts, and a Kimi K3 toy calibrated with static NVFP4 and exported through Megatron-Bridge now has equal weight_scale_2 across every fused group (4 gate pairs differed before).

LGTM: prior correctness concerns are resolved, including static NVFP4 gate sharing; U04P40HGBKL still needs to sign off on the justified existing-test edits.

Needs action:

  • Confirm the existing-test edits in tests/unit/torch/quantization/test_shared_input.py, as requested in 5786191830: naming coverage expands, distinct input ranges strengthen synchronization checks, and existing assertions remain.

No action needed:

  • ✔️ Resolved since 5786188680: static NVFP4 global-range synchronization now includes KDA g_proj/f_a_proj/b_proj and MLA g_proj, with GPU assertions covering both layouts. Reply 6663252214 and the current diff address the OMNIML-6311 deferral in 6645385752.
  • Earlier changelog, tuple-reuse, explanatory-comment, assertion-wording, and plain-HF regression fixes remain visible. The settled import discussion is not reopened.
  • The supplied 61 core additions are under budget; no licensing changes appear. No additional material defect was identified.
  • Baseline commit: e481d487570a1ad13092d88be900ba8d985ce850. Base AGENTS.md and CONTRIBUTING.md were unavailable.
