Refs PickNikRobotics/moveit_pro#24179 (story A of PickNikRobotics/moveit_pro#18694)

Motivation

Numbers often reach Script expressions as strings, for example through SubTree ports. Today -, *, / on them fail with Operation not permitted, '3 apples' + 4 silently gives 7 because Any::stringToNumber accepts a numeric prefix, 1 .. 2 returns an empty value that := reports as "not initialized", and .. prints doubles as 2.000000. The measured table is on PickNikRobotics/moveit_pro#18694.

Brief description

All in include/behaviortree_cpp/scripting/operators.hpp. Helpers live in BT::Ast::detail; Any::stringToNumber and Any's double-to-string conversion are unchanged, so port conversions elsewhere in the library behave as before.

  • A string is a number in a script only if all of it, apart from surrounding whitespace, is a finite decimal number. ' 5 ' is 5; '3 apples', '5000ms', '+5', '0x10', 'nan', 'inf', '1e999', '1e-400' and '' are not. A character check runs before parsing so every standard library rejects the same strings.
  • Arithmetic, bitwise (exact int64, also for strings above 2^53), logic, unary - ~ !, compound assignment, ?: and comparisons use that rule. A non-number is a RuntimeError naming the operand; with + it suggests ...
  • + on two strings still concatenates. PickNikRobotics/moveit_pro#24181 removes that in 11.0.0.
  • Two numeric strings compare as numbers, exactly: both integers as int64, otherwise as long double so IsSame applies no tolerance. Numbers too large to compare exactly are an error; strings compare as text only when one of them is not a number.
  • Integer text beyond ±2^53 is an error in arithmetic, as an int64 entry already is, instead of rounding silently. Every number-to-double cast in the operators turns a precision-loss std::runtime_error into a RuntimeError, so ParseScriptAndExecute returns an error instead of throwing.
  • .. joins any strings and numbers. Whole doubles up to 2^53 print as integers (2, not 2.000000); others in the shortest %g form that reads back exactly (0.25, 0.0001, 0.30000000000000004), the same on every standard library.
  • Compound assignment on an entry holding a string keeps a string (c := '1'; c += 1 gives '2'); with a number entry, a numeric string on the right is a number (n := 1; n += '2' gives 3).

Behavior changes to decide on before this ships

compatibility-bot (moveit_pro reviewer role) rated these Needs-discussion for a non-major release. None of the scripts shipped in moveit_pro or moveit_pro_example_ws change outcome; the only visible difference is one log line in hangar_sim/objectives/calibrate_sam3_mask_areas.xml (threshold=0.250000 → threshold=0.25).

  1. Two numeric strings compare as numbers: '10' > '9' becomes true; '007' == '7' and '1.0' == '1' become equal. Previously text comparison.
  2. Strings that only start with a number now stop the Objective with an error instead of being read by their leading digits: '5000ms' / 1000 (was 5), '3 apples' == 3 (was true), '3 apples' ? 1 : 2 (was 1), x = '3 apples' into a number entry (was 3), '0x10' == 0 (was true), 'inf' > 1 (was true).
  3. .. drops trailing zeros on doubles.

Options for 1 and 2: accept in the next minor with a Breaking Change: release note in the moveit_pro BTCPP_PICKNIK_VERSION bump PR, or hold those parts for 11.0.0 with #24181.

How it was tested

Built in a container from the moveit-pro-dev image (clang with libstdc++ 13), plain CMake, BTCPP_GROOT_INTERFACE=OFF.

  • Full suite: 583/583 (580 on main-picknik before the change, plus ParserTest.UntypedNumericOperands, ParserTest.NumberStreamFallbacks and SubTree.ScriptingTypingIssue_SubtractNumericStringPort).
  • The new tests fail against the old operators.hpp.
  • ParserTest.* and SubTree.* clean under ASan and UBSan.
  • pre-commit (clang-format 17, clang-tidy, codespell) clean on the changed files.
  • Not exercised: the branches for standard libraries without floating-point from_chars (libc++). ParserTest.NumberStreamFallbacks calls the stream parse and format functions directly; the from_chars vs. stream choice inside ParseWholeNumber only runs there.

Follow-ups after merge

  • apt_build_farm: git_sha and revision 6 → ros-jazzy-behaviortree-cpp-picknik=4.9.0-6noble.
  • moveit_pro: bump BTCPP_PICKNIK_VERSION, add the script operator reference page, correct the two operator sentences in PickNikRobotics/moveit_pro#24177's docs and the pin line in docs_nonpublic/design/behaviortree-cpp-fork-coexistence.md, and add the release notes.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Numeric strings can now be used in arithmetic, comparisons, conditions, assignments, and unary operations. Whitespace around numeric values is accepted.
    • Concatenation supports strings and numbers, with consistent number formatting. Numeric results assigned to string entries are converted to strings.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Integer precision is preserved for bitwise operations and comparisons. Values that cannot be converted or compared safely now produce script runtime errors.
    • Conditional expressions evaluate numeric strings by their value, so "0" is false rather than true.

Scripting operators now parse complete numeric strings for arithmetic, comparisons, unary and conditional expressions, and assignments. Integer parsing preserves int64_t precision for bitwise operations and comparisons. Concatenation formats numeric operands. Tests cover parsing, conversion errors, assignment behavior, and subtree input/output mapping.

Changes: Scripting numeric operands

Layer / File(s) Summary
Numeric parsing and conversion
include/behaviortree_cpp/scripting/operators.hpp, tests/script_parser_test.cpp
Added locale-independent decimal parsing, exact integer parsing, numeric formatting, and conversion errors for scripting operands. Tests cover valid decimal and exponent forms, invalid trailing text, overflow, and formatting round trips.
Expression operators
include/behaviortree_cpp/scripting/operators.hpp, tests/script_parser_test.cpp
Unary, binary, comparison, and conditional expressions now handle numeric strings. .. concatenation accepts strings and numbers, while + retains string concatenation for two strings. Tests cover numeric operands, exactness limits, and conversion errors.
Assignment conversion
include/behaviortree_cpp/scripting/operators.hpp, tests/script_parser_test.cpp, tests/gtest_subtree.cpp
Assignments and compound arithmetic convert numeric strings. Numeric results assigned to string entries are formatted as strings. Tests cover assignment behavior and subtracting a numeric string from a mapped subtree input.
Merge Risk: Low · up to d5c79

Scripts that apply bitwise operations to integers above 2^53 can silently return a rounded value. The case is narrow and has a small fix, so the change is mergeable with that follow-up noted.

Explanation

The pull request description is detailed and covers the motivation, behavior changes, compatibility risks, testing, formatting and linting checks, and follow-up actions. It also identifies the added regression tests and notes the untested libc++ branches. No required information from the repository template is materially missing.

Full details: Human Review Check

Explanation

The PR changes one scripting implementation header and two test files. It does not change authentication, permissions, secrets, encryption, CI/CD, infrastructure, deployment, launch scripts, or MoveIt Pro behavior packages. The diff adds scripting behavior and tests but does not alter exported declarations or an SDK surface. It is not a cross-cutting change across major subsystems.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Do not round bitwise results above 2^53 to the nearest representable double.

BitwiseOperand reads integer strings and int64 entries exactly. Lines 539, 541 and 543 then cast the int64_t result to double. That cast rounds any result whose magnitude exceeds 2^53.

  • '9007199254740993' | 0 returns 9007199254740992.
  • big ^ 0 returns 9007199254740992, with big = 9007199254740993.

Neither case reports an error. The PR's rule for arithmetic is that integer text a double would round is an error (ArithmeticString, NumberToDouble). Bitwise results break that rule silently. Line 412 (~) has the same cast. The test on line 819 passes only because ~9007199254740993 happens to be an even number that a double holds exactly.

Return the result as int64_t when a double cannot hold it exactly. Results in the exact range can stay double, so existing typed entries do not change.

+inline Any IntegerResult(int64_t value)

+  {
+    return Any(value);
+  }
+  return Any(static_cast<double>(value));
+}

         case bit_and:

-          return Any(static_cast<double>(li ^ ri));
+          return detail::IntegerResult(li ^ ri);
       }

Apply the same change on line 412: return detail::IntegerResult(~detail::BitwiseOperand(rhs_v, "~"));.

Can we move this change into moveit_pro itself?

We're drifting further and further from upstream, and I'd like to do less of that going forward if we can, and maybe even get back to upstream if we can.

Moving it into moveit_pro isn't possible: the operators live in scripting/operators.hpp, and every script — Script, ScriptCondition, Precondition, and the _skipIf/_while/_successIf attributes parsed in src/bt_factory.cpp:387 — goes through the library's ParseScript. The only hook moveit_pro has is registerScriptingEnum.

Upstream already covers the core of this, though. 0388ee81 (BehaviorTree#1254, 2026-10-24) coerces a whole-number string mixed with a number in + - * /, with a full-consumption check, which is upstream's version of this fork's own are_numbers change. ea8dafaa (BehaviorTree#1239) and b4c070b4 (BehaviorTree#1191) fix ~ and ! on the same values. None of them are in main-picknik yet.

To drift less, I'd propose:

  1. Pick those three upstream commits into main-picknik instead of this PR, replacing the fork-only are_numbers code.
  2. Send what upstream still lacks as upstream PRs: 1 .. 2 returning an empty value, '1' - '2' on two numeric strings, prefix parsing in comparisons, and .. printing 2.000000. They reach the fork with the next sync.

Then I'd close this PR. Does that work for you?
