Don't hold the connection lock without the GIL when freeing a result - #808

Conversation
Result deallocation took the connection lock with the GIL released and then waited to get the GIL back while still holding the lock. When a result is freed on a thread other than its connection's (the cyclic GC runs wherever it is triggered), the connection's own thread can run during that wait, and its next call fails with "This connection is already in use from another thread" although it is the only thread using the connection. If that call was store_result(), the unread result is left on the socket and every later query fails with (2014, "Commands out of sync"). Only take the lock while holding the GIL. If it is busy, the owner is using the connection with the GIL released, so back off with the GIL released, without taking the lock, and retry. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

199-211: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winSynchronize cleanup with the owner’s in-flight query.
handoff.put(result)transfers ownership but does not synchronize cleanup with the nextconn.query(). The cleanup thread can delete the result before that query acquires the connection lock. In that schedule,_mysql_ResultObject_LockWait()is not contended, so the pre-change implementation also passes. The current assertions do not detect this schedule. Synchronize the cleanup attempt with the connection-lock acquisition and assert that it occurs duringSELECT SLEEP(...).🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Cap the POSIX retry delay at 1000 µs.
When the lock remains busy after the 800 µs retry, the loop doubles wait_us to 1600. On POSIX, the next nanosleep can therefore wait 1.6 ms instead of the intended 1 ms maximum. Clamp the doubled value to 1000 µs.

Since 2.3.0 (#781), freeing a result on a thread other than its connection's can make the connection's own thread fail with
ProgrammingError: This connection is already in use from another thread, even though only one thread uses the connection. If the failing call isstore_result(), the query's result stays unread on the socket, and every later query on that connection fails with(2014, "Commands out of sync").We hit this in production on Django under ASGI right after upgrading 2.2.8 → 2.3.0. Python's cyclic GC frees results on whichever thread triggers a collection.
Cause
_mysql_ResultObject_dealloctakes the connection lock through_mysql_ConnectionObject_LockWait, which acquires it with the GIL released and then waits inPy_END_ALLOW_THREADSwhile holding the lock. The connection's owner can run Python during that wait, and its next call's non-blocking_mysql_ConnectionObject_Lockfails.Fix
LockWaitnow only takes the lock while holding the GIL. If the lock is busy, the owner is using the connection with the GIL released, so it backs off (50 µs, doubling to 1 ms) with the GIL released, without taking the lock, and retries. A simpler "acquire, release, then retry with the GIL" still collides, because the lock is held for an instant without the GIL; I measured that too.Reproduction
One thread runs queries and does a little CPU work between them; a second thread only drops references to finished results:
On MySQL 8.4, macOS, CPython 3.12, over 5 s:
With a contended owner (
SELECT SLEEP(0.02)while the other thread frees results), 2.3.0 fails 199 of 200 queries; this PR completes all 200 with correct rows and no hang.Tests
Adds two tests to
tests/test_connection.py: results freed in another thread while the owner keeps running Python, and while the owner is inside a slow query. Both fail onmainwith the error above and pass with this change. The full suite passes locally (141 tests, MySQL 8.4).Note: on free-threaded builds there is no GIL to order against, so a dealloc on another thread can still race the owner. That case is genuinely concurrent use and is unchanged here.
