Use an SSR-safe layout subscription.
A descendant render-time prefetch can complete after commit but before passive effects flush. The current React.useEffect subscription then misses the success event, so no unused-prefetch timer starts.
An unconditional React.useLayoutEffect can emit React 18's server-rendering warning. QueryStrictMode is not client-only in development. Select React.useEffect on the server and React.useLayoutEffect on the client.

@TkDodo Yes—useSyncExternalStore fits if we expose the tracking state as a store with a stable snapshot. React can detect a snapshot change between render and subscription. React docs
But replacing useEffect with useSyncExternalStore alone would not recover missed success events. The store must retain enough state to identify eligible prefetches and their completion times. It must also preserve the exclusions for manual writes and queries fetched before mounting.
My layout-effect suggestion only narrows the subscription window. It does not recover earlier events. A snapshot-backed tracker would address that gap more reliably, with getServerSnapshot for SSR.

great work 🙌
I’m generally thinking if we should widen the StrictMode to also work on non-suspense queries? Like, an unused prefetching for example doesn’t matter if it’s suspense or not. And having a normal query "trigger" the fetch without prefetching is also not ideal for non-suspense. Yes, for suspense it’s worse because it can waterfall easily, but would be good actually to either have this report on everything or have it be opt-in. Maybe it should report on anything and can be filtered out during logging?

would be great if we could also hide this behind an env check to keep bundle-size impact minimal?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
had an agent come up with some suggestions for bundle size:
- guard the hook calls (pretty much what I said)
- guard context creation:
const QueryStrictModeContext =
process.env.NODE_ENV !== 'production'
? React.createContext<QueryStrictModeValue | null>(null)
: null
if we guard the hook calls, we don’t need the context to be created
- select the provider implementation at export time:
export const QueryStrictMode =
process.env.NODE_ENV === 'production'
? (props: QueryStrictModeProps) => props.children
: DevQueryStrictMode
- use a separate entry point like
@tanstack/react-query/strict-mode:
{
"exports": {
"./strict-mode": {
"development": "./build/strict-mode.development.js",
"default": "./build/strict-mode.production.js"
}
}
}
the prod entry point could have the stubbed context and provider and the dev entrypoint has the real things.

…in 'QueryStrictMode' 'useQuery', 'useInfiniteQuery', and 'useQueries' now report a 'missing-prefetch' when they start the initial fetch of a query that wasn't prefetched. The event gets a 'suspense' flag so a logger can filter for the suspense hooks, which cause request waterfalls. Each query state is only logged once, so rendering twice before the fetch starts (for example in 'React.StrictMode') doesn't log twice. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

These tests render outside of 'act' to show the gap after a render-time prefetch, while a sibling suspends the first mount, and in 'React.StrictMode'. They also show that changing 'unusedPrefetchTimeout' drops pending timers, and guard against a false report for a prefetch that a component reads once 'QueryStrictMode' commits. Four of these tests fail until the subscription gap and the timer leak are fixed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Share used and checked per QueryCache, not per QueryStrictMode instance.
This applies to two outermost QueryStrictModes that use the same QueryClient, for example per-route or per-layout siblings. Both instances share one PrefetchTracker, but each instance has its own used and checked sets. This causes two incorrect results:
- A query read only inside instance A calls only A's
markUsed. After the reader unmounts, its observer count is 0. Instance B then reports a false'unused-prefetch'. - A query that nothing uses is reported once by each instance. If the handler throws, both subtrees unmount.
The JSDoc says the check covers "the whole cache of the QueryClient", so the used state must also exist once per cache. Move used and checked into PrefetchTracker. Make markUsed write to the tracker of client.getQueryCache(). When the first timer callback runs, it calls used.add(query). Every other instance then sees isUnused(query) === false, so the query is reported only once.
Sketch of the fix
interface PrefetchTracker {
prefetches: Map<Query<any, any, any, any>, number>
+ used: WeakSet<Query<any, any, any, any>>
+ checked: WeakMap<Query<any, any, any, any>, number>
listeners: Set<(query: Query<any, any, any, any>) => void>
mounted: number
unsubscribe: () => void
}
...
- tracker = { prefetches, listeners, mounted: 0, unsubscribe }
+ tracker = {
+ prefetches,
+ used: new WeakSet(),
+ checked: new WeakMap(),
+ listeners,
+ mounted: 0,
+ unsubscribe,
+ }In DevQueryStrictMode, read used and checked from getPrefetchTracker(cache) inside the effect. Define markUsed as (query) => prefetchTrackers.get(query.cache?)... or as a closure over cache that adds to the tracker's used set when the tracker exists.
