Walkthrough

The project introduces core, core-android, device, and server modules for version 2.0. It adds device and server client builders, side-specific agent metadata, release artifact validation, updated workflows, and migration documentation.

Changes

Pub/Sub package split

Layer / File(s) Summary
Module topology and publication setup
settings.gradle.kts, gradle.properties, gradle/libs.versions.toml, core/*, core-android/*, device/*, server/*, java/gradle.properties, android/gradle.properties, liveobjects/*, pubsub-adapter/*, uts/*, examples/*
The project replaces the java and android modules with core, core-android, device, and server. Publication metadata and module dependencies use the new structure.
Device and server client entry points
device/src/commonMain/kotlin/io/ably/pubsub/device/PubSubDevice.kt, server/src/main/java/io/ably/pubsub/server/PubSubServer.java, shared/src/main/java/io/ably/pubsub/internal/Side.java, lib/src/main/java/io/ably/lib/util/Side.java, lib/src/main/java/io/ably/lib/types/ClientOptions.java, lib/src/main/java/io/ably/lib/transport/Defaults.java, device/src/*Test*, server/src/test/*, lib/src/test/*
The new builders configure AblyRealtime and AblyRest clients. Side-specific agent entries are injected. Client option copying includes headers, fallback hosts, transport parameters, and agents.
Release verification and build workflows
build.gradle.kts, .github/workflows/check.yml, .github/workflows/release.yaml, .github/workflows/emulate.yml, .github/workflows/integration-test.yml, .github/workflows/javadoc.yml, deploy/check-archives.sh
verifyReleaseArtifacts checks artifact coordinates and lockstep versions. Release and dry-run workflows execute the check. Test, Javadoc, and archive paths use the renamed modules.
Migration guidance and deprecation references
README.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, core/src/main/java/io/ably/lib/rest/AblyRest.java, core-android/src/main/java/io/ably/lib/rest/AblyRest.java, lib/src/main/java/io/ably/lib/realtime/AblyRealtime.java, core-android/src/main/java/io/ably/lib/push/ActivationContext.java
Documentation references the new modules and builders. Existing REST and realtime constructors are deprecated with replacement links.

The core split mechanics are implemented well — the exact door surfaces, the io.ably.pubsub:{core,core-android,device,server} coordinates with the core POMs marked internal-use, versionless side flags applied last so they win collisions, the renamed family identifier with a wire-level canary, and single-version lockstep enforced by a release pre-flight. But the branch is not GA-ready: 3 Critical and 9 Major issues follow as individual comments below (plus several Minor/Info ones).

[MAJOR] features.yml still passes repository-name: ably-java

features.yml passes repository-name: ably-java into the shared ably/features workflow, which uses it for the OIDC role assumption and the sdk.ably.com upload path. With the repo renamed to ably-pubsub-java (PubSub device/server split rollout, PDR-091b2), the features report will publish under the wrong key or fail role assumption — silently, on push to main. Please update it to ably-pubsub-java in lockstep with the rename (and confirm the ably/features repo knows the new name).

(Posted as a general comment because features.yml is not touched by this PR.)

[MAJOR] No 1.x maintenance branch; merge to main strands 1.x fixes

Merging this branch renames the Maven group to io.ably.pubsub, bumps to 2.0.0, and deletes the io.ably:ably-java/io.ably:ably-android artifact definitions — after which main can no longer cut a 1.x security or critical fix. The PubSub device/server split rollout (PDR-091b2) requires a dedicated maintenance branch for the existing packages (security/critical fixes only, 1-year support window, then EOL). No such branch exists on the remote today — only ephemeral release/* branches and the v1.8.2 tag. Please cut the 1.x maintenance branch (e.g. from v1.8.2) before this merges, and state the support-window/EOL plan in the PR description.

(Posted as a general comment because this is about repository/branch state, not a specific changed line.)

[MINOR] LIBRARY_NAME build-config fields are dead after the family-identifier flip

LIBRARY_NAME is still generated into BuildConfig for both core ("java") and core-android ("android"), but nothing reads it — Defaults.ABLY_AGENT_VERSION now hardcodes ably-pubsub-java. That also means the Android artifact no longer reports a distinct ably-android-style family; fine under the PubSub device/server split rollout (PDR-091b2), which defines a single family per SDK, but worth a deliberate note. Please drop the dead fields (or add a comment recording that Android intentionally shares the ably-pubsub-java family) so the next reader isn't misled into thinking they still drive the agent string.

(Posted as a general comment because core/build.gradle.kts and core-android/build.gradle.kts are pure renames with no changed lines to anchor to in this PR.)

[INFO] No API/binary-compatibility gate on the new public surface

There's no API/binary-compatibility check on the new public door surface — no japicmp, metalava, revapi or Kotlin apiValidation anywhere in the build (also true pre-split, so not a regression); device has Kotlin explicitApi(), which governs visibility only. Reasonable to defer for a greenfield v2 — flagging it so it's a conscious choice rather than an oversight, given these are brand-new public APIs.

device/src/androidTest/java/io/ably/pubsub/device/PubSubDeviceTest.java:43

  • PubSubDevice only declares the no-argument clientBuilder() method, so this ClientOptions overload does not compile. Configure the returned builder through its fluent methods instead.
    device/src/androidTest/java/io/ably/pubsub/device/PubSubDeviceTest.java:49
  • There is no clientBuilder(String) overload in PubSubDevice, so the instrumentation test cannot compile. Use the builder's key method and disable auto-connect for this fake key.
    device/src/androidTest/java/io/ably/pubsub/device/PubSubDeviceTest.java:63
  • The new builder has no clientBuilder(ClientOptions) overload, so this call does not compile. Pass the relevant option values through the fluent API; this still allows the test to verify that the caller's agents map is untouched.

…e/core-android

Applies the first step of PDR-091b to this repo: the shared implementation
becomes the new internal core artifacts, published under the io.ably.pubsub
group at the new 2.0.0 major.

- The `java` module becomes `core`, publishing io.ably.pubsub:core (jar).
- The `android` module becomes `core-android`, publishing
  io.ably.pubsub:core-android (aar).
- GROUP moves to io.ably.pubsub and VERSION_NAME to 2.0.0 for everything
this repo publishes (liveobjects, pubsub-adapter and network-client-*
move group alongside, per the rollout plan).
- Both core POMs state explicitly that they are internal implementation
artifacts for Ably's own device/server packages, not for direct use.
- liveobjects, pubsub-adapter, uts and examples retarget their project
dependencies; CI workflows, CONTRIBUTING and the uts README follow the
  new task paths.

The io.ably:ably-java and io.ably:ably-android artifacts are never
published from this branch again; 1.x fixes ship from a maintenance
branch per PDR-091b.

…2.0.0

The test deliberately hardcodes the expected ably-java/<version> agent
value rather than deriving it from Defaults (per its own comment), so it
must be bumped with VERSION_NAME. The wire value was already correctly
ably-java/2.0.0; only the canary was stale.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Adds the two public artifacts of the PDR-091b split, following the
ably-js reference implementation (ably-js#2293):

- io.ably.pubsub:server (jar, on :core): PubSubServer.httpClientBuilder()
  and PubSubServer.realtimeClientBuilder().
- io.ably.pubsub:device (multiplatform Android, JVM): PubSubDevice.clientBuilder().
- A shared side helper (shared/src/main/java, compiled into both door
artifacts rather than published) owns the ably-pubsub-device and
ably-pubsub-server agent identifiers and the stamping rules: caller
entries preserved, side entry applied last and unoverridable, caller's
options never mutated, null passing through to the core's own error.
The -device/-server suffixes are load-bearing for MAU billing
  classification and documented as such.
- Fixes ClientOptions.copy() to carry headers, fallbackHosts,
transportParams and agents, which it previously dropped; the doors rely
on copy() for non-mutating stamping. Covered by a new unit test.
- Server tests include a wire-level assertion that the Ably-Agent HTTP
header carries ably-pubsub-server/<version> alongside the ably-java
base identifier; device instrumentation tests assert the same contract
and run in the emulator matrix.

PDR-091b requires core, core-android, device and server to release
together on one version, with partial release impossible:

- A verifyReleaseArtifacts task asserts the exact published artifact
set, group and lockstep VERSION_NAME (catching module-local
overrides), failing before anything is uploaded. The release workflow
  runs it ahead of publishAndReleaseToMavenCentral.
- A release-dry-run job in check.yml runs the pre-flight plus
publishToMavenLocal on every PR, so coordinate and version
regressions surface continuously rather than on release day.
- README gains a note describing the in-development 2.0 artifact set
and that 1.x installation instructions still apply.

Mirrors ably-js#2294: the UTS constructs every client through a single
seam (TestRealtimeClient/TestRestClient in ClientFactories.kt), now
selected by the uts.side system property — `core` (default) keeps the
core constructors; `server` routes both client kinds through
PubSubServer's side-stamping builders. The builders only stamp the
side-declaring agent flag and pass everything else through (DebugOptions
included, via its copy() override), so conformance must be identical on
both legs; CI runs both for the UTS unit and integration tiers.

A harness self-test (SideModesTest, mirroring ably-js's
side_modes.test.ts) asserts each mode's stamp on the wire via the mock
HTTP engine — bare versionless flag in server mode, none in core mode —
so a broken seam cannot silently degrade the server leg into a duplicate
core run.

Unlike ably-js there is no device leg: io.ably.pubsub:device is an
Android artifact and cannot run on the JVM this suite uses; its stamping
contract is covered by the device module's instrumentation tests.

Also completes DebugOptions.copy() with the same four fields the base
ClientOptions.copy() was missing (headers, fallbackHosts,
transportParams, agents) — the door stamping relies on the polymorphic
copy() to carry the suite's mock hooks.

Add the behaviour changes section (channel release rules, Ably-Agent
identifiers, server token-auth caveat, options copy, reauth UPDATE timing,
push token persistence, log tags), the missing rename rows, a word-bounded
portable rename script, the hostname-endpoint fallback and port guidance,
device examples that avoid embedded API keys, and the one-door rule.
Install coordinates, support table, one-door rule and the server
token-auth caveat move to the 2.0 artifacts, the proxy sample compiles,
the changelog gets a 2.0.0 entry, build file names and the okhttp swap
snippet are corrected, and the examples README states the real API floor.
The module is :core, the packages are io.ably.pubsub, and the HTTP test
helper is TestHttpClient. Document the server-leg commands, which must
include :core's tasks since the conformance specs live there.
The Ably-Agent header and the realtime agent param followed HashMap
iteration order, so the entry order varied between runs. Sorting by
name makes it deterministic for proxies and tests, matching ably-go;
the platform entry still comes last.
build() on both doors now hands the client options.copy() instead of
the builder's own object, so reusing a builder or changing the passed
options afterwards no longer reaches a client already built, and the
caller's agents map is never replaced. ClientOptions.copy() now copies
the headers and agents maps and the fallbackHosts and transportParams
arrays, DebugOptions.copy() reuses the same field list so it cannot
drift, and a reflection test fails when an option is not copied.

Side.injectSideAgent also removes the opposite side's identifier, so a
caller-supplied ably-pubsub-server on a device client (or the reverse)
no longer survives. Also fixes the stale Side class Javadoc, adds the
server token-auth (40167) caveat to PubSubServer, and replaces the API
key in the PubSubDevice example with authUrl.
Pin the literal side-flag strings, assert the Ably-Agent header and the
WebSocket agent query param for both doors, check that builder reuse
and mutation of the passed options do not affect built clients, that a
caller-supplied opposite identifier is stripped, and that a device
client without credentials fails like the server one.
Gradle does not pass -D properties to the forked test JVM, so the
server CI leg (-Duts.side=server) only reached :uts; the :core and
:liveobjects specs silently ran through the core constructors. Forward
the property (or UTS_SIDE) the way :uts does and run the server legs of
check.yml and integration-test.yml over :core, :uts and :liveobjects.
Delete deploy/check-archives.sh (nothing references it), drop the dead
API 19 -PhttpURLConnection expression from emulate.yml and note that the
emulator matrix does not cover core-android's minSdk 19 floor, remove
the unread BuildConfig.LIBRARY_NAME fields, and make verifyReleaseArtifacts
expect the real Kotlin Multiplatform device publications (device-jvm and
device-android) as well as the root one.
ChannelsCollectionTest only covered unknown, INITIALIZED, DETACHED and
ATTACHED. Add FAILED (release succeeds) plus ATTACHING, DETACHING and
SUSPENDED (release throws 90011 and leaves the channel in the map).
Build the expected agent param from BuildConfig.VERSION instead of the
hardcoded 2.0.0 so a version bump does not break the test.
The HttpCore dynamicAgents note pointed at createWrapperSdkProxy as if
the HTTP client had one; only the pubsub-adapter realtime client does.
The ClientOptions.endpoint Javadoc now warns against putting a port in
endpoint, matching the migration guide.
Reverts the rename to idempotentHttpPublishing. The option keeps the
specification's name (TO3n), and the ably-go rename it was matching is
being reverted. The door builders' setter, tests and the migration
guide and changelog entries go back with it; the guide now says the
name is kept deliberately.
The install snippets are updated at every release (CONTRIBUTING.md
release step 2), so the version shown is always the latest one.
