docs(adr): 0060 iOS slim writes launchd overrides while the simulator is shut down - #1194
ADR 0060, Accepted — not yet implemented. iOS slim stops running /bin/sh inside the simulator. The driver writes the launchd overrides into /private/var/tmp/com.apple.CoreSimulator.SimDevice.<udid>/disabled.plist while the simulator is shut down, boots once, and reads the result back to decide the mode. Destroy removes that folder. The label list moves to simslim v0.13.0. Supersedes ADR 0002 §2, §3, §5, §8 and §9; narrows §10.
Stays open at the bottom of the feature's stack until #1196 merges.
Two questions the ADR review (round 1) found open; both decided conservatively in delivery, pending the maintainer.
1. What does a recovery boot of a slim simulator do?
(taken) Writes nothing, reads nothing back, and returns the mode as the driver does today. A user sees no change from today.
Write and read back like prepare. A user would see a recovered device re-checked, at the cost of a readback during recovery.
Why: closest to today's code and ADR 0002's "a recovery boot never slims". Reverting: one new line in ADR 0060 and a branch in makeReady.
2. Does device.slimmed fire when the file write failed but the readback shows every label as wanted?
(taken) No. The device is granted slim, the worker log has a slim-skipped line, and no event fires. Event consumers see device.slimmed only when Simlock both wrote and confirmed the overrides.
Yes. Event consumers would also see devices slimmed by an older file.
Why: the event keeps meaning "Simlock slimmed this device". Reverting: one row of ADR 0060 §2's table and one test case.
Round 2 found one more open question; decided conservatively in delivery, pending the maintainer.
Does device.slimmed fire when the overrides file is already as wanted, so the write is skipped? This is the usual case for a reclaimed slim simulator leased again.
(taken) Yes: a skipped write counts as successful; the boot and readback run, and a matching readback fires device.slimmed. Event consumers keep seeing one event per slim boot, as today (a reclaimed device re-slims and fires one on every boot).
No: event consumers would see device.slimmed only for a device's first slim boot.
Why: keeps today's event count. Reverting: one sentence of ADR 0060 §2 and one test case in #1196.

The changes add ADR 0060, marked accepted but not yet implemented, to document a proposed offline disabled.plist workflow for slim simulator settings. The ADR index and ADR 0002 status now identify the sections that ADR 0060 supersedes or narrows.

Before / after behavior
observed — Modified behavior in docs/internal/adr/0002-opt-in-slim-ios-simulators.md: The status now identifies the provisions superseded by ADR 0060 and notes that §10 is narrowed by it; previously, the status only said “Accepted.”
observed — Modified behavior in docs/internal/adr/0060-ios-slim-writes-launchd-overrides-while-the-simulator-is-shut-down.md: Adds ADR 0060 documenting the offline disabled.plist workflow, label merge rules, boot readback and mode/event outcomes, recovery behavior, persisted state, erase/destroy cleanup, timing, and label-list changes. It also records the prior workflow’s runtime failures and the alternatives considered.
observed — Modified behavior in docs/internal/adr/README.md: The ADR 0002 status now records the sections and details superseded by ADR 0060 and the narrowing of §10.
observed — Modified behavior in docs/internal/adr/README.md: Added ADR 0060’s index row with its title, accepted-but-not-yet-implemented status, and superseded ADR 0002 sections.

Place ADR 0060 after ADR 0059.
The index is ordered by ADR number, but this entry appears before the existing ADR 0059 row at Line 100. Move the 0060 row after 0059 to preserve the documented ordering.

The new ADR 0001 and ADR 0002 rows duplicate the existing entries at Lines 44-45. ADR 0002 now has conflicting status text. Replace the old rows instead of adding new rows.

Qualify the slim-grant proof claim.
The outcome table grants slim after failed or timed-out readback, and recovery boots perform no readback but preserve the conservative slim result. This conflicts with the unconditional statement that every slim grant is proven by readback.
Suggested fix
-- A slim grant is proven by the readback, not assumed.+- On a normal slim boot, a matching readback proves the `slim` grant. Failed or timed-out readback follows ADR 0002's conservative rule and reports `slim`; recovery boots perform no write or readback.

Record the §10 narrowing in the index row.
ADR 0060 narrows ADR 0002 §10, and ADR 0002 records this status. Add ; §10 narrowed by 0060 so this index exposes the complete relationship. Otherwise, readers can apply §10 without seeing its narrowed scope. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
