ci: require Before / After screenshots for UI changes - #34
PRs change how components look, but the description often shows nothing. #31 was rendered on a simulator, master and the branch side by side in light and dark, and still has no screenshot. Of the last eight merged PRs, five changed Sources/, and three of those (#22, #21, #17) have no image. Roman asked for a required check: the author adds Before / After.
What was done?
New check "Before / After screenshots" (workflow PR description). It applies to a PR that changes anything under Sources/ (components, design tokens, the asset catalog, including a file renamed out of it) or Package.swift (the platform floor). Such a PR passes when either of these holds:
its description shows at least two different images (or videos) under a heading that mentions "Before / After" (with "&" / "vs" too) or is "Screenshots". Any level, any case, an emoji in front is fine;
it ticks "No visual change". The step summary then lists the Sources/ files, so a reviewer can challenge it.
Otherwise it fails, naming the files and both ways through. Editing the description re-runs it.
It reads the rendered description (body_html via the API). What counts is what a reader sees: comments, code blocks, list indentation and other markdown rules are GitHub's, not re-implemented. Emoji and badges (including workflow and codecov badges) do not count. The same upload behind different URLs counts once, and a struck-out "No visual change" does not count.
It runs on pull_request_target, so the workflow and the script come from the base branch and a PR cannot loosen its own check. The job checks out only .github/scripts from the base (sparse) and runs no code from the PR.
On this PR the check does not run yet; it starts with the next ones.
A stacked PR gets what its base branch has.
Over 3000 changed files: GitHub lists only the first 3000, so the rest count as possibly UI.
PR template: a "Before / After" section with a light/dark × before/after table and the "No visual change" box.
Tests: screenshots-test.py runs 30 cases on HTML fixtures, with no network, as a step of the Conventions job. A failing case must be the check's own verdict, not a crash.
CLAUDE.md states the rule.
After merge, Before / After screenshots goes into the master ruleset as a required check.
Before / After
No visual change (refactor, tests, docs). Say why in "What was done?".
This PR touches only .github/ and CLAUDE.md.
How Has This Been Tested?
screenshots-test.py: all 30 cases pass. actionlint is clean.
Against GitHub's own rendering (markdown API, gfm):
Four rounds of local review. They moved the check from a markdown parser in awk to the rendered HTML, and from pull_request to pull_request_target. The pitcrew review's 8 recommendations are fixed in fc05864.

A PR that changes anything under Sources/ must show at least two different
images under a "Before / After" (or "Screenshots") heading in its description,
or tick "No visual change". The check reads the description as GitHub renders
it (body_html), so comments, code blocks and list indentation need no special
handling, and it runs on pull_request_target with the base branch's workflow
and script, so a PR cannot loosen it; it executes no code from the PR.
The PR template gains the section with a light/dark table and the checkbox.
The check's tests run in a new "Test CI scripts" job; CLAUDE.md states the rule.

The PR adds screenshot guidance to the pull request template and a check for visual declarations when files under Sources/ change. It adds offline tests and GitHub Actions workflows to validate and run the check.
Changes: Visual-change screenshot check
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Description format and parsing .github/PULL_REQUEST_TEMPLATE.md, .github/scripts/screenshots-check.py, CLAUDE.md
The PR template adds Before / After image placeholders for light and dark mode and a no-visual-change checkbox. The checker parses matching description sections and identifies eligible images and checked tasks. CLAUDE.md states the screenshot requirement.
Changed-file detection and enforcement .github/scripts/screenshots-check.py
The checker reads changed paths and the rendered PR description from fixtures or GitHub. It handles renamed paths and the 3,000-file listing cap. For changes under Sources/, it passes if the description contains at least two distinct images in a matching section or a checked “No visual change” task.
Automated tests and workflow integration .github/scripts/tests/screenshots-test.py, .github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/workflows/screenshots.yml
Offline tests cover screenshot descriptions, changed paths, renames, and the file-list cap. CI runs those tests. A pull request workflow runs the check for open PRs on the configured events.
The check has bounded false-pass and false-failure cases involving multiple headings, and the contributor guidance overstates what it verifies. These are localized CI issues rather than application-runtime risks; merging warrants owner awareness and follow-up.

1 · Idea
✅ valid
Three of the last five Sources/ PRs had no image. The check asks for Before / After, or for a visible "No visual change" tick
2 · Architecture
✅ right layer
pull_request_target with the script from the base branch, so a PR cannot loosen its own check. It reads the rendered body_html instead of re-implementing markdown
3 · Completeness
✅ complete
Template, CLAUDE.md, tests and CI job are all in. The stacked-PR limit is named in the workflow header. The ruleset step after merge is stated
4 · Code
✅ clean
No PR code is checked out or run. The token is read-only, and no PR text reaches run:. Paths are escaped before printing
— urlsplit("http://[bad/x.png") raises ValueError: Invalid IPv6 URL, and distinct() runs before the "No visual change" test. Such a src would stop the job with a traceback, even on a PR that ticked the box. A try/except ValueError that keeps the raw string as the key would avoid it. (the ValueError is reproduced; whether GitHub renders such a src is not verified)
— the fail cases assert only returncode == 1, and an uncaught exception also exits 1. A regression that makes main() raise would leave all fail cases green. Checking for the ::error::This PR changes UI files line, or for no Traceback, pins it.
The heading match is wide, and the image filter is narrow —
— screenshots? matches any heading that contains the word, such as ### Screenshot tests. Images outside the three listed badge hosts count, so a workflow badge (…/actions/workflows/…/badge.svg) or codecov passes as a screenshot. The description says badges do not count. (reproduced with a fixture)
— every printed line starts with " - ", so it can never start a ::command::. Only CR/LF need escaping. As written, a path like Foo%Bar.swift is listed as Foo%25Bar.swift in the log and in the summary. The security lane noted the legacy ##[command] syntax as a cosmetic leftover (not verified). Wrapping each path in backticks in the summary would also stop markdown in file names from rendering.
— a PR that only raises the platform floor (like #15) can change which branches the components compile, yet it is told "No UI files changed". Adding Package.swift to the UI set would cover it.
— Test CI scripts starts one more ubuntu runner and checkout for one python3 call. A step in the existing conventions job would cover it and keep the CI-script tests in one place.
The pull_request_target check attaches to the PR head. The repo's existing Check PR title format workflow uses the same trigger, and its run on this PR carries head 6c428eb, so the check can be made required as planned.
Review details
Tier: normal (CI tooling on a privileged trigger). Levels 1–3 inline. Level 4 used the general lane (/code-review high), which ran the 24 cases and extra fixtures, and the security lane (the pull_request_target context, workflow-command injection, token scope, required-check failure modes), which ran injection fixtures against shown(). The verifier checked:
the urlsplit crash;
the test assertion at screenshots-test.py:75;
the head SHA of an existing pull_request_target run in this repo, which closed the security lane's open question about which SHA the check attaches to.
The stacked-PR limit (a feat/* base with no workflow) is already stated in
- A malformed image URL no longer crashes the check (it is skipped).
- A "Screenshots" heading must be just that (an emoji or a parenthetical is
fine); "Screenshot tests" is not the section.
- Badges count as no screenshot: shields, badgen, codecov and any */badge.*
path, such as a workflow badge.
- One upload is counted once with or without a query on user-attachments and
GitHub's image hosts.
- A struck-out "No visual change" does not count.
- Package.swift counts as a UI file: the platform floor decides what compiles.
- Paths are printed in backticks with CR/LF escaped, instead of %-encoded.
- Tests tell the check's own failure from a crash; the test runs as a step of
the Conventions job instead of a job of its own.

The rule says CI enforces light and dark screenshots and the "say why" explanation. CI does neither. The check passes when the description has at least two distinct images under a "Before / After" or "Screenshots" heading, or when "No visual change" is ticked. It does not read the image mode or the explanation text. Reviewers check that the images show light and dark, and that a "No visual change" PR gives its reason.
📝 Suggested fix
- **PR screenshots:** a PR that changes anything under `Sources/` shows Before / After
screenshots (light and dark) in its description, or ticks "No visual change" and says why.
- CI (`Before / After screenshots`) enforces it.+ CI (`Before / After screenshots`) passes when the description has at least two distinct+ images under a Before / After or Screenshots heading, or when "No visual change" is ticked.+ Reviewers check that the images show light and dark, and that a "No visual change" PR+ says why.

Badge exclusion compares URL strings against HTTPS prefixes, while image admission also accepts HTTP URLs; HTTP badge images can therefore count as screenshots.
The check passes with badges instead of screenshots.
This can occur when: A qualifying section contains two distinct rendered badge images whose canonical sources begin http://img.shields.io/ or http://badgen.net/.

— ## Screenshots: light / dark, ## UI screenshots, ## Screenshots & video and ## 1. Screenshots, each with two uploads, all fail now; only Screenshots, alone or with a parenthetical, passes. The docstring (
- a heading whose text mentions "Before / After" or "Screenshots" (any level, any case,
) still says a heading that mentions Screenshots counts. Excluding only the test case, for example screenshots?(?!\s*tests?\b), keeps the old reach. The template heading is "Before / After", so most PRs are unaffected. (reproduced with fixtures)
— if an earlier step in the job fails, screenshots-test.py is skipped and not reported. if: success() || failure() on the step would keep its result visible.
— any image whose last path segment contains badge is dropped, so externally hosted screenshots of badge UI (…/coin-selector-badge-light.png) don't count. GitHub uploads have UUID names and are unaffected. Matching badge.svg or a /badge segment would be tighter. (reproduced with a fixture)
— Package@swift-6.x.swift (a version-specific manifest that can change the floor) is not counted, and Package.swift.orig would be. (reproduced with a fixture)
— the tick now ignores text inside <del>, but <del>-wrapped images in the section still count as screenshots. Skipping images while self.struck is set would make the two rules match. (reproduced with a fixture)
— the new docstring says PR text cannot start a workflow command, but the runner's legacy ##[…] form is not tied to the start of a line. Escaping ##[ would close it. The job is read-only, so the impact is cosmetic. (not verified)

Re-review of the bot review on 6c428eb; the new diff is fc05864 + 9252d93. Levels 1–3 re-checked inline, since nothing in the design changed. Level 4 used the general lane (/code-review high) on the new commits. The verifier ran the PR's 33 cases locally, plus probe fixtures for the heading regex, struck images, badge file names and the manifest names. Dropped:
other aliases of one upload (/assets/123/uuid?raw=true, blob/…?raw=true vs raw.githubusercontent.com): rare, and gaming the check stays visible in the description;
printing the 3000-file placeholder in backticks: cosmetic;
- A heading that starts with "Screenshots" (after an emoji, a number or "UI") opens the
section, unless it is about tests; struck-out headings and images do not count.
- Badges are matched by a badge segment, a badge SVG or a badge host, so screenshots of
badge UI still count.
- Package@swift-*.swift counts as a UI change; Package.swift.orig does not.
- PR-controlled text in the log is wrapped in ::stop-commands:: blocks, which stops both
"::" and legacy "##[" commands.
- Both test steps of the conventions job run even when the check above them failed.

Re: the review on 9252d93 — all 6 recommendations are addressed in 63c6156:
Screenshots heading — a heading that starts with "Screenshots" (after an emoji, a number or "UI") opens the section again: UI screenshots: light / dark, 1. Screenshots & video pass. Any heading with a word starting with "test" does not (Screenshot tests, Screenshots (tests), Screenshot_tests, Screenshot of the test run). A heading that only mentions screenshots in the middle (Notes on screenshots) does not either. Docstring updated.
Test step after a failure — both test steps of the conventions job now run with !cancelled() && steps.checkout.outcome == 'success'.
Badge filter — a badge is now a path segment that is exactly badge / badges / project_badges, an SVG with "badge" in its name, or a badge.* / badges.* host. coin-selector-badge-light.png and a status-badge/ folder of PNGs count as screenshots.
Manifests — Package.swift and Package@swift-*.swift are UI changes; Package.swift.orig is not. Template and CLAUDE.md follow.
Struck-out images — skipped, and a struck-out heading does not open a section.
##[ in file names — confirmed real: the runner looks for ##[ anywhere in a line, and an escape is not enough, because its culture-aware search skips zero-width characters. All PR-controlled log lines are now wrapped in ::stop-commands::<random token> blocks, which stop both :: and ##[ parsing. The test harness checks that the forged text stays inside a block, and wraps its own failure dump the same way.
The test suite is at 55 cases. The live results are unchanged: #23, #29 and #34 pass; #15, #30, #31 and #32 fail.
— TESTS matches any word that starts with test, so Screenshots (testnet), Screenshots from TestFlight and Screenshots (tested on iPhone 16) don't open a section. testnet and TestFlight are everyday words in Dash PRs. Matching whole words (tests?|testing) keeps the "Screenshot tests" exclusion. (reproduced: is_section() returns False for all three)
— only punctuation, digits and UI may come before "Screenshots", so iOS screenshots and Light / dark screenshots fail while UI screenshots passes. Accepting the word anywhere in a heading that isn't about tests would be simpler and leave fewer special cases. (reproduced)
— BADGE_SEGMENT matches any path segment case-insensitively, so screenshots under …/docs/Badge/light.png are dropped. The catalog has a Colors/Badge group, so a badge-colour PR could hit this. Limiting the segment rule to the last segment, or to lower-case badge/badges, would avoid it. (reproduced)
— with the file-name rule now limited to SVGs, coveralls.io/…/badge.png counts as a screenshot. That is the trade-off for item 3 of the last review. Adding coveralls.io to NOT_SCREENSHOT_HOSTS covers the common case. (reproduced)
— the test copies the real tree and expects its baseline to pass. When conventions.sh has already failed on a real violation, every case fails as well, and the log fills with unrelated FAIL lines under the one real error. The !cancelled() guard is right for the screenshots test, but conventions-test.sh would be clearer as if: success().

The verifier ran the PR's cases locally and called is_badge / is_section on the reported inputs. Dropped: one stop-commands token per summary() call, a cleanup with no wrong result.
- "Screenshots" anywhere in a heading opens the section unless the heading is about tests;
only the whole words test / tests / testing exclude it, so testnet and TestFlight pass.
- A folder named after a badge component ("Badge/") no longer drops its screenshots;
coveralls.io and api.netlify.com are badge hosts.
- conventions-test.sh runs only after a passing conventions.sh, which it needs as a
clean baseline; the screenshots test still runs regardless.

Re: the review on 63c6156 — all 5 recommendations are addressed in cbf0056:
test as a prefix — only the whole words test / tests / testing exclude a heading now. Screenshots (testnet), Screenshots from TestFlight and Screenshots (tested on iPhone 16) open a section.
Prefix whitelist — dropped. "Screenshots" anywhere in a heading that is not about tests counts (iOS screenshots, Light / dark screenshots).
Badge folder — a folder named after a badge component no longer drops its screenshots. A badge is now a URL ending in /badge or /badges, a lower-case badges / project_badges directory (GitLab, SonarCloud), a badge SVG, or a badge host.
PNG badges — coveralls.io and api.netlify.com are on the badge-host list.
conventions-test.sh — back to running only after a passing conventions.sh. The screenshots test still runs regardless.
The test suite is at 63 cases. The live results are unchanged.
From here on, further heading or badge variants of the heuristic will be left as they are unless they block a real PR: deliberate gaming stays visible in the description for the human reviewer.
— narrowing the segment rule to the last segment lets goreportcard.com/badge/github.com/x/y, app.codacy.com/project/badge/Grade/abc and readthedocs.org/projects/x/badge/?version=latest through. A trailing slash (…/badge/) also passes, because the last segment is empty. A lower-case badge / badges segment anywhere (with empty segments dropped) catches all of these and keeps the Badge/ folder. (reproduced: is_badge() returns False for each)
The lower-case badges/ folder still drops screenshots —
— docs/badges/light.png is treated as a badge while docs/Badges/ and docs/Badge/ are not. That is the price of catching GitLab's /badges/<branch>/pipeline.svg. Limiting the folder rule to non-image leaves (SVG, or no extension) would keep both. (reproduced)
— Screenshots (test app) and UI test screenshots don't open a section, so a compliant PR with two real images fails. Excluding only screenshot test(s|ing) and test(s)? screenshot-style phrases, or only headings where "test" comes right after "screenshot", would be narrower. (reproduced)
A heading that says there are no screenshots opens a section —
returnbool(BEFORE_AFTER.search(heading) or (SCREENSHOTS.search(heading) andnotTESTS.search(heading)))
— Why no screenshots followed by two diagrams passes. The commit dropped the case that pinned the old behaviour. Low risk: the author would have to add two images under it, and a reader sees that. (reproduced)
— www.coveralls.io is not matched. Matching the registered domain (host == d or host.endswith("." + d)) covers subdomains. api.netlify.com is already caught by the badges segment. (reproduced for www.coveralls.io)
about tests (any level, any case, with or without an emoji in front), and under it,
— "any level, any case, with or without an emoji in front" describes the old prefix rule; with a substring match it adds nothing.

Badges with badge in the middle of the path — a lower-case badge / badges / project_badges segment anywhere marks a badge again (goreportcard, Codacy, Read the Docs, a trailing …/badge/). On GitHub's own hosts (github.com, raw.githubusercontent.com, media.githubusercontent.com) a badge segment is skipped, because it can be a branch name (feat/badge). A listed badge host now also covers its subdomains (flat.badgen.net, www.coveralls.io, so item 6 is covered too). Each badge URL has a case of its own, paired with one real screenshot.

The template asks for files dropped into the table, which become GitHub uploads (github.com/user-attachments/assets/…, private-user-images…, user-images…). Counting only those uploads as screenshots would remove the badge heuristics entirely, at the cost of rejecting externally hosted screenshots. This is a design choice for the maintainer, not a defect.
