feat(download): support specific and multiple version selection (--version) (#17) - #107
Resolves#17 (item 2: Download of specific or multiple versions)
Summary
Adds support for downloading specific versions, all versions, or the latest version across artifacts, groups, and declarative workflows via a new --version / --target-version option and Python API parameter.
Artifact and group downloads previously only supported downloading either the latest version (default) or all versions (--all-versions).
Users could not specify a specific release version (e.g. --version 2022.12.01) when downloading an artifact or group, requiring manual URL resolution down to the version leaf.
Changes
Version Resolution (databusclient/api/download.py):
Extended _get_databus_versions_of_artifact() to accept version: str | None = None:
'latest' (or None when all_versions=False): returns the latest version URL.
'all' (or all_versions=True): returns all version URLs.
<specific-version>: matches by full version URI or by version identifier segment (e.g. 2022.05.01), raising a clear ValueError with available versions if not found.
Updated _download_artifact() and _download_group() to accept and propagate version.
In _download_group(), if a specific version is requested, artifacts not containing that release are skipped gracefully with a log message rather than crashing the group download.
Updated download() API to accept version (and target_version alias) and dispatch to artifact and group handlers.
CLI Options (databusclient/cli.py):
Added --version and --target-version options to the download command:
databusclient download --version 2022.12.01 <ARTIFACT_OR_GROUP_URI>
databusclient download --version all <ARTIFACT_OR_GROUP_URI>
Maintained full backwards-compatibility with --all-versions.
Recorded version parameter in manifest replay parameters.
Propagated version from workflow step definitions to api_download().
Documentation & Tests:
Updated doc/cli-usage.md with CLI options and usage examples.
Updated doc/module-usage.md with Python API download examples.
Added 18 unit and integration tests in tests/test_download_version_selection.py covering all version resolution cases, group skipping, CLI flags, manifest recording/replay, and workflow step execution.
Verification
Full test suite: 216 passed, 3 skipped.
Linting: poetry run ruff check . passed with 0 errors.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Artifact and group downloads can target the latest version, all versions, or a specific version ID or URI.
When a requested version is unavailable for an artifact in a group, that artifact is skipped; other version-selection errors are reported.
Version selection is available through the command-line interface and carries through download replay and workflows.
Documentation
Added command-line and Python examples for downloading specific versions or all versions.
…n) (dbpedia#17)
- Support '--version' / '--target-version' in CLI download command ('latest', 'all', or specific version ID/URI)
- Support 'version' and 'target_version' parameters in api_download()
- Filter artifact versions by exact URI or version segment in _get_databus_versions_of_artifact()
- Propagate version parameter in _download_group() with graceful skip for artifacts not containing the requested version
- Record version in manifest replay parameters and restore during manifest replay
- Support version option in DownloadStep for declarative workflows
- Add 18 unit and integration tests covering version selection, CLI flags, manifest replay, and workflow execution
- Update CLI and module documentation
Downloads now support selecting the latest version, all versions, or a specific version ID or URI. The selector is available through the public API and CLI, and passes through manifest replay and workflow download steps.
Changes: Download version selection
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Resolve versions for artifacts and groups databusclient/api/download.py, tests/test_download_version_selection.py
Artifact downloads resolve selectors against version URIs or their final path segments. Group downloads pass the selector to each artifact and skip artifacts that lack a requested specific version. Tests cover selector resolution and artifact and group downloads.
The public API and CLI accept version selectors, with target_version taking precedence over version. The CLI records the selector in manifest parameters. Replay and workflow steps pass the selector to the API. Tests and documentation cover these entry points.
Version selection now rejects another artifact’s full version URI. No merge-blocking regression remains established; the existing group-download edge case and stronger test assertion can be addressed separately.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #17 requires latest-version default behavior, selection of all versions, and selection of a specific version. The reviewed changes implement these behaviors for artifact and group downloads through the version and target_version API parameters and the --version and --target-version CLI options. Group downloads skip artifacts that do not contain a requested specific version. Manifest replay and declarative workflow steps propagate the selected version. The added tests cover resolution, dispatch, CLI handling, replay, and workflows. Account downloads and whole-Databus mirroring are separate scope items identified as outside this PR.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within issue #17's version-selection scope. API and CLI changes implement version resolution and propagation. Manifest replay, workflow propagation, documentation, and tests support the feature. No unrelated account-download or whole-Databus implementation is introduced.

Require an exact match for full version URIs.
The version selector matches on the last path segment of any supplied URI. A full URI for another artifact therefore selects this artifact's version when the version IDs are equal. For example, a version value of https://databus.dbpedia.org/user/group/artifact-b/2022.05.01 selects .../artifact-a/2022.05.01. The code then downloads artifact A's files without an error. Compare full URIs exactly, and keep the ID-only match for bare version IDs.

Skip artifacts with a missing databus:hasVersion in group downloads.
1411-1414: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Skip artifacts with a missing databus:hasVersion in group downloads.
When a specific version is requested, _download_group skips an artifact whose version list is empty. It does not skip an artifact whose databus:hasVersion field is absent. That case raises No 'databus:hasVersion' field in artifact JSON-LD, which the except clause does not match. The exception re-raises, the loop stops, and later artifacts that contain the requested version are not downloaded. Add this message to the skip condition so that a missing field is treated the same as an empty list.

Update the exception filter in _download_group to also skip artifacts when the
error indicates that the databus:hasVersion field is absent, treating this case

Assert the exact ordered version list in the latest-with-all-versions test.
The assertions at lines 70-71 pass for any list of three entries, including three copies of the latest URL or an unsorted list. Asserting the full ordered list checks the newest-first contract that the test docstring describes.

Update the assertions in the latest-with-all-versions test to verify the exact
expected version URLs in newest-first order, rather than only checking that the
result is a three-item list. Keep the expected versions aligned with the test’s
