Fixes #446

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved reliability when BLE attribute values are read or updated concurrently.
    • Improved synchronization during BLE stack initialization and shutdown.
    • BLE initialization now fails if synchronization setup cannot be completed.
    • BLE notifications validate assembled data and report oversized or failed updates.
    • Improved compatibility on Cortex-M0 and M0+ platforms.
    • Improved handling of task waits before initialization and during shutdown.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified that getAttVal() returns a reference.
    • Documented that returned attribute buffers may be invalidated by concurrent updates.

📝 Walkthrough

Arrr, NimBLE now synchronizes attribute values, task semaphores, and device state with atomic guards. Notification payloads are assembled locally before storage. Lock and utility lifecycles follow device initialization and shutdown.

Changes: Thread-Safe Synchronization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Attribute value lock and guarded access
src/NimBLEAttValue.h, src/NimBLEAttValue.cpp, src/NimBLEServer.cpp, src/NimBLELocalValueAttribute.h
Arrr, NimBLEAttValue::Lock guards value access and GATT mbuf appends. deepCopy and copyFrom report allocation success. Cortex-M0/M0+ atomic operations use interrupt masking.
Task semaphore synchronization
src/NimBLEUtils.h, src/NimBLEUtils.cpp
Arrr, task semaphore entries use atomic usage state. SpinGuard serializes semaphore-vector access. deinit() waits for active users and pending waits before cleanup.
Device lifecycle integration
src/NimBLEDevice.h, src/NimBLEDevice.cpp
Initialization and synchronization flags use atomic state. Device initialization creates the attribute lock. Device shutdown deinitializes the attribute lock and utilities.
Notification payload assembly
src/NimBLEClient.cpp
Arrr, notification segments are assembled in a bounded local NimBLEAttValue. The stored value changes only after validation and copy success. The callback uses the local value.

Device initialization now reports a value-lock failure. A conditional Cortex-M0 portability risk remains, but no affected target build was established; merging is reasonable with owner awareness of that limitation.

Explanation

Arrr, issue #446 requires concurrent setValue(), append(), and deepCopy() to be safe. append() now locks its operation, but setValue() acquires NimBLEAttValue::Lock and then calls append(), which acquires the same non-recursive mutex again. This self-deadlocks the required setValue() path. The available evidence shows no automated regression tests for the concurrent paths.

Resolution

Arrr, acquire NimBLEAttValue::Lock only once in nested paths. Use an unlocked append helper from setValue() and operator+=, or use an equivalent design that avoids recursive acquisition. Add automated tests for concurrent setValue(), append(), and deepCopy() operations.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Arrr, the NimBLEAttValue, NimBLEServer, NimBLEClient, initialization, and semaphore lifecycle changes support the synchronization objective in issue #446. The NimBLEDevice::onSync() log-text correction and the NimBLELocalValueAttribute.h documentation correction have no demonstrated connection to that objective. These changes are outside the linked issue scope.

Resolution

Arrr, remove the unrelated log and documentation corrections, or move them to a separate pull request.

🟠 Major · Keep the shared NimBLEAttValue mutex alive during shutdown, arrr. · NimBLEDevice.cpp:1097

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the shared NimBLEAttValue mutex alive during shutdown, arrr.

nimble_port_stop() does not join the FreeRTOS host task. The host task can still execute NimBLEServer::handleGattEvent() while deinit(true) deletes the semaphore through NimBLEAttValue::Lock::deinit(). Application tasks can also hold or await this public shared lock. Deleting an active FreeRTOS mutex causes invalid synchronization.

Remove this teardown. Lock::init() can reuse the initialized static mutex after reinitialization.

Remove the NimBLEAttValue::Lock::deinit() call from the shutdown path in
deinit(bool), keeping the shared mutex alive so active tasks can continue using
it and reinitialization can reuse it.

* Make deepCopy return whether memory allocation and copying succeeded.
* Add copyFrom to expose that result to callers.
* Allocate notification values using the full mbuf packet length, with BLE_ATT_ATTR_MAX_LEN as the maximum.
* Reject oversized notifications and report temporary-buffer allocation or characteristic-value copy failures as insufficient resources.
* Reassemble notification data before updating the characteristic value or invoking its callback.
