Byte Buddy 1.18.16

  • Correct detection of a dropped implicit this frame in constructors with long or double parameters when using Advice.
  • Detect a dropped uninitialized this frame in constructors after full frames when using Advice with copied arguments.
  • Update ASM to version 9.11.1 and the ASM to Class File API bridge to version 0.0.14.
  • Use a valid tag for the Gradle plugin portal.

Byte Buddy 1.18.15

  • Update ASM to version 9.11 and add support for Java 28.

Byte Buddy 1.18.14

  • Avoid exposure of the agent argument on the command line of the process that is spawned for an external attachment.
  • Avoid the resolution of symbolic links when the Gradle plugin deletes a folder recursively.
  • Limit the nesting depth that is accepted when parsing a generic type signature to avoid an exhaustion of the stack for a malformed class file.
  • Sign all deployed files using sigstore, in addition to the existing GPG signature.
  • Validate entry names when the Android plugin retains a file to avoid the propagation of path traversals.

Byte Buddy 1.18.13

  • Actually include the SBOM within the published artifacts.
  • Avoid propagation of path traversals that are contained in jar files which are copied without transformation.
  • Avoid repeated traversal of previously visited type hierarchies to improve performance.
  • Correct Kotlin support of the Gradle plugin to redirect the classes directory of a source set while retaining support for legacy Gradle versions.
  • Create Gradle tasks using Gradle's task registration API if available.

Byte Buddy 1.18.12

  • Automatically support Kotlin in Gradle plugin.
  • Add support for native attach on Windows for ARM64.
  • Correct JNA injector which accidentally created on based on Unsafe.

Byte Buddy 1.18.11

  • Add SBOM to published artifacts.
  • Check for traversable paths injected into class files as a rather hypothetical attack vector.

Byte Buddy 1.18.10

  • Delay change of default for unsage use to Java 26 and improve error message.

Byte Buddy 1.18.9

  • Disable use of Unsafe by default when Java 25or newer is discovered.
  • Check for escape when creating folders in Plugin.Engine.
  • Improve OpenJ9 attachment.
  • Avoid null pointer on missing annotation types.
  • Improve diagnostics for external agent attachment.
  • Improve on Gradle context discovery.
  • Support Android libraries on AGP9 or newer.
  • Update ASM.

Byte Buddy 1.18.8

  • Improve support for repeatable builds.
  • Fix reordering of exception table in type initializers when instrumenting.

Byte Buddy 1.18.7

🔴 Android test builds will likely fail again with "Unsupported class file major version 68" because this bump undoes the pin added to stop that error. The comment at android/build.gradle:141-144 says byte-buddy 1.17.x and later ship a META-INF/versions/24 overlay. It says this AGP's Jetifier cannot parse that overlay, and that 1.15.x is the last line without it. 1.18.16 is past that line, and android/gradle.properties:26 sets android.enableJetifier=true. Fix: keep both force lines at 1.15.11 and ignore this dependency in dependabot. Or first remove the Jetifier dependency, by disabling it or upgrading AGP 8.1.4, and then update the comment.

Why this was flagged

android/gradle.properties:26 sets android.enableJetifier=true, and the buildscript uses AGP 8.1.4 (android/build.gradle:8). Because of that, Jetifier transforms every resolved artifact in the test classpaths, including byte-buddy that mockito-core/mockito-android 5.24.0 pull in (android/build.gradle:127-128). The new forces at android/build.gradle:145-146 resolve byte-buddy and byte-buddy-agent 1.18.16. That is within the 1.17.x+ range the comment at android/build.gradle:141-144 says ships a META-INF/versions/24 class (major 68) that this Jetifier cannot parse. So testDebugUnitTest and androidTest builds are expected to fail during the Jetifier transform with "Unsupported class file major version 68". On the base branch, the 1.15.11 pin avoids that failure. The PR changes only the version strings and does not change the Jetifier setting or the AGP version, so nothing else guards against the problem. The comment now also contradicts the code.

Verification: The diff changes android/build.gradle:145-146 from force 'net.bytebuddy:byte-buddy:1.15.11' / byte-buddy-agent:1.15.11 to 1.18.16. The conditions that made the pin necessary still hold. android/gradle.properties:26 still has android.enableJetifier=true. The buildscript still uses com.android.tools.build:gradle:8.1.4 (build.gradle:8).
