Add a manually dispatched, report-only backlog assessment with scoped repository reads and shared Copilot guidance. Pin GPT-6.1-sol with max reasoning effort for the main assessment, preserve detector effort defaults, and add strict compilation and contract checks with dated rollout documentation. This pull request introduces a pilot for semi-automated repository maintenance using GitHub Copilot-powered workflows, with a focus on backlog assessment and improved contributor guidance. It adds new documentation, workflow files, and repository tools to support a human-in-the-loop automation experiment. No existing maintenance or deployment workflows are changed, and all automation remains subject to maintainer approval.
The most important changes are:
Repository automation experiment:
AUTOMATION.mdto document the experiment's goals, status, and phased rollout plan for agent-assisted maintenance, including a detailed description of the first pilot workflow and model selection.README.mdwith a summary of the automation experiment, its current status, and links to the new documentation.Agent-assisted workflows and checks:
.github/workflows/backlog-assessment.md, a Markdown-defined workflow for draft backlog assessment, which reads issues and pull requests, generates a draft report for maintainers, and enforces strict boundaries (read-only, no issue/PR modification, human review required)..github/workflows/agent-workflow-check.ymlto validate and compile agent workflows, check generated files, and run contract tests for repository automation tools..gitattributesto prevent linguist counting.Contributor and automation guidance:
.github/copilot-instructions.mdwith contributor guidelines for using TypeChat and interacting with Copilot-powered workflows, emphasizing schema accuracy, validation, and safe practices.Repository tools and configuration:
