plain-parser reads the current ***plain syntax: # func-id headings in functional specs and test plain files with explicit test scenarios.
Functional specs
A functionality starts with a # <func-id> heading. Its body is free text up to the next heading or section marker: prose, bullets at any indentation, or any other shape. A func-id has only lowercase letters, digits and hyphens, and is unique in its module.
Test plain files
A test plain file binds to one functionality with module: and func_id: in its frontmatter. It has a conformance tests section and an acceptance tests section. Each scenario is a # <scenario-id> heading followed by free text, which the parser keeps as written. The parser reads every .plain file under the folders given with --test-dir or the config key test-dir. Without both, no test plain files are read; with a conformance-tests-script in the config, a test directory is required. It checks that each file binds to an existing functionality, that the concepts in the scenarios are defined, that linked files exist, and that scenario-ids are unique per functionality.
Completeness
When the config names a conformance-tests-script, every functionality of every module in the chain needs a test plain file bound to it. The sections of the file may be empty. The error names the functionality as <module>:<func-id>, the conventional path and the add-test-scenarios skill.
Previous syntax
Bullets in functional specs without a # <func-id> heading, and an acceptance tests section in a spec plain file, are errors. The message gives the file and the line and says the previous syntax is not supported.
Parse output plain-parser parse prints format version 2. Each functionality carries its id, its text and its scenarios, and a new test_plain_files map lists every test plain file with the functionality it binds to. A reader of format version 1 must be updated. Today only plain-forge reads the output, and it reads only the exit code.
Before it works for users
A release with a vX.Y.Z tag publishes the package to PyPI. After that, plain-healthcheck in plain-forge can run its parser step again. The codeplain client and backend keep their own parser copies until phase 3.

feat: explicit test scenarios
Oct 19, 2026
A functionality is a `# <func-id>` heading followed by its body: a prose
statement line and the `- ` bullets indented under it. The parse result
entry carries the id, the body markdown, its linked resources and empty
conformance and acceptance test lists.
A flush-left `- ` list in functional specs, and an acceptance tests or
conformance tests section in a core spec, are the old syntax; the error
names the migrate-plain-syntax skill. The nested acceptance test code is
removed and every fixture is converted.
A func-id has only lowercase letters, digits and hyphens and is unique in
its module. The errors name the line, the module and, for a duplicate,
the line of the first use.
get_frids yields the func-ids in file order, and the helpers that take a
frid take a func-id. get_specifications_for_frid returns the conformance
and acceptance scenarios of the functionality, and collect_linked_resources
covers the links in them. The legacy tree walk over sections, ID and
Heading is removed.
A test plain file binds to one functionality with the frontmatter keys
module and func_id and holds a conformance tests section followed by an
acceptance tests section. A scenario is a `# <scenario-id>` heading and
its text, kept verbatim. Liquid and linked resources work as in a core
spec; the concepts of the scenarios are checked once the bound module is
known.
Every .plain file under the test folders is read as a test plain file,
bound to a module of the chain and one of its func-ids, checked against
the concepts of that module, and merged into the functionality in
discovery order. With conformance-tests-script in the config, every
functionality needs a conformance scenario; the error names it as
<module>:<func-id> and the add-test-scenarios skill. The config keys
test-dir and conformance-tests-script are read like template-dir.
check and parse take --test-dir, repeatable, which overrides the test-dir
config key and the default tests folder. The parse output is format
version 2: the functionality trees carry the merged scenarios, resources
covers the links in them, and test_plain_files maps each file to the
functionality it binds to. The README describes the new syntax.
Every block after a `# <func-id>` heading, up to the next heading or
section marker, is the body: prose, lists at any indentation, code
blocks, tables. The blank lines between the blocks are kept. A list
before the first heading is content before the first heading, like any
other block there.
The messages for content before the first func-id heading, for a
functional specs section without a heading, and for a conformance or
acceptance tests section in a spec plain file say the previous syntax
is not supported and name no skill. Only a missing conformance scenario
names add-test-scenarios. "Core spec" is now "spec plain file".

Walkthrough
The parser now represents functionalities with explicit IDs and parses separate test plain files. Project parsing discovers and binds scenarios, validates linked resources and concepts, and can require a test file for each functionality. The CLI accepts test-directory settings and emits version-2 parse results.
Changes: Project test parsing and functionality model
Functional specifications now use # <func-id> headings and structured records. Lookup, resource collection, and range checks use functionality IDs. Fixtures and parser tests use the heading-based format.
Parse test plain files src/plain_parser/test_plain_file.py, tests/data/testplainfile/*, tests/test_test_plain_file.py
Test files parse frontmatter, conformance scenarios, acceptance scenarios, links, code variables, and concept references. Invalid structure and identifiers raise syntax errors.
Discover and bind project scenarios src/plain_parser/project.py, src/plain_parser/exceptions.py, tests/test_project.py, tests/data/cli/project/*
Project parsing discovers test files and binds scenarios to module functionalities. It validates bindings, duplicate scenario IDs, and concepts. An optional check requires a test file for every functionality.
Expose project parsing through CLI and output src/plain_parser/cli.py, src/plain_parser/__init__.py, README.md, tests/test_cli.py, tests/test_imports.py
The CLI accepts repeatable test-directory options, reads conformance-test configuration, and includes test-file bindings in version-2 parse output. The README and CLI tests document and exercise these interfaces.

Merge Risk: Low · up to e0c5f
Valid scenarios can be misparsed when they use longer code fences, and overlapping test directories can make a single scenario file fail as a duplicate. The change remains mergeable with these known limitations explicitly accepted or fixed.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to e0c5f
Test-scenario files now participate in parsing, template processing, and linked-file validation, while consumers must accommodate the new output format. The inspected paths preserve module-binding checks and explicit directory selection. No introduced security vulnerability was established, but exposure through hosted callers or credentialed automation remains unknown.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The added input scope is the selected test-directory trees plus files reachable through their existing template and resource-loading context. Resource access is not confined to the bound module’s directory: parent-relative paths and lexical, non-resolved symlink paths remain supported. Effective exposure therefore depends on the process’s filesystem permissions and any external isolation.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Directory selection is explicit, CLI selections override configuration, and binding rejects modules outside the parsed chain or unknown functionality IDs. Scenario links retain the pre-existing rejection of URL schemes, absolute paths, and .plain resource targets. These are parser-level controls, not tenant authorization or a filesystem sandbox.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The conformance-tests-script configuration value enables a presence check; the added flow does not execute that script. A bound file with empty scenario sections satisfies completeness. Successful validation therefore establishes file coverage, not execution of conformance tests or verification of security properties.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — If this parser is hosted for untrusted repositories, process specifications and selected test files with a restricted filesystem view and minimal credentials. Treat scenario template processing as having the same trust requirements as specification template processing; relative-link validation alone should not be used as sandbox enforcement.

…-ids
An id is segments of lowercase letters and digits with one hyphen
between them, so an id never starts or ends with a hyphen, never has
two hyphens in a row, and is never only hyphens.
Inside a fenced code block of a scenario, a line that starts with `# `,
`***` or `>` is scenario text, not a heading, a section marker or a
comment. A fence that is never closed is an error that names the
scenario.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Match the complete closing fence.
If a scenario opens with four backticks, a line of three backticks is still code content. This code treats that line as a closer. It also treats ```not-a-close as a closer. A later # <scenario-id> line can then become a new scenario, or the actual closer can produce a false unclosed-fence error. Track the opening run length. Close only on the same character, at least that many times, followed by whitespace. Add tests for both cases. (spec.commonmark.org)
Based on learnings, CommonMark closing fences must match the opening character and minimum length and have only trailing whitespace.

Deduplicate files found in overlapping test directories.
If --test-dir tests and --test-dir tests/nested select the same scenario file, discovery returns that file twice. Binding then treats its scenario IDs as duplicates, so a valid check or parse fails. Keep each discovered file once while preserving the configured directory order. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

The parser has no default test directory. Test plain files come from
--test-dir or from the test-dir config key; without both, none are
read. A config that names a conformance-tests-script without a test
directory is a usage error.
