Dev build and release notices post with the org SLACK_BOT_TOKEN to vars.SLACK_CHANNEL_ID instead of the per-repo SLACK_WEBHOOK_URL, whose webhook no longer exists. Adds notify-slack-on-main-merge.yml, matching plain-forge.

  • Build, upload and publish results post from a final notify job. A failed Slack post fails only that job (no more continue-on-error hiding it), not the publish or its GitHub deployment, and "Re-run failed jobs" re-posts without publishing again.
  • The release-start notice stays in the build job with continue-on-error, so Slack can't block a release.
  • Every Slack step skips when SLACK_CHANNEL_ID isn't shared with the repo.
  • Merge notices run on pull_request_target with permissions: {}, so merged fork PRs post too; nothing from the PR is checked out or run. PR titles are escaped (& < >, line breaks) so a title can't ping @channel.

Merge once the org secret and variable exist.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Slack notifications are sent for pull requests merged into the main branch and for development and PyPI publishing events when a channel is configured.
    • Publishing notifications distinguish failures in pre-publish checks, builds, uploads, and publication, and report successful pre-release and regular publications.
    • Successful publishing messages include the published version and installation guidance.
    • Slack delivery errors fail publishing notifications; the build-start notification remains non-fatal. Notifications are skipped when no Slack channel is configured.

The webhook these notices used no longer exists. Post with the org
SLACK_BOT_TOKEN to vars.SLACK_CHANNEL_ID, and fail the step when Slack
rejects a post so a dead channel shows up red; only the release-start
notice stays non-fatal. PR titles are escaped so they cannot mention
@channel.

Walkthrough

The workflows add Slack notifications for merged pull requests and update development and release publication notifications. They use a configured channel and Slack bot token, with messages tied to specific workflow outcomes.

Changes: Merged pull request notifications

Layer / File(s) Summary
Merged pull request notification
.github/workflows/notify-slack-on-main-merge.yml
A new workflow posts a formatted message when a pull request targeting main is merged and SLACK_CHANNEL_ID is configured. It sanitizes the title and uses the Slack bot token.

Development publication notifications

Layer / File(s) Summary
Development publication notification job
.github/workflows/publish-dev-to-pypi.yml
A separate notification job reports check, build, and publication failures, or successful publication with the version and --pre install command. It uses the Slack action and bot token.

Release publication notifications

Layer / File(s) Summary
Release publication notification flow
.github/workflows/publish-to-pypi.yml
The build-start notice uses the Slack action and remains non-fatal. A separate job reports pre-publish, build, upload, and PyPI failures, and sends distinct success messages for pre-releases and regular releases. The workflow derives the version from the release tag.

Review details

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/workflows/notify-slack-on-main-merge.yml: Adds the pull_request_target workflow for closed pull requests targeting main. The job runs only for merged pull requests when SLACK_CHANNEL_ID is nonempty, with no granted permissions. It sanitizes the title by replacing line breaks and escaping Slack markup characters, then posts a formatted merge message using the Slack bot token; action errors fail the step.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/workflows/publish-to-pypi.yml: The build-start notice replaces a shell-based webhook post with the Slack GitHub Action. It runs only when SLACK_CHANNEL_ID is nonempty, uses the bot token, and continues on error.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/workflows/publish-to-pypi.yml: The build job’s conditional, continue-on-error Slack failure step was removed.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/workflows/publish-to-pypi.yml: The release-upload job’s conditional, continue-on-error Slack failure step was removed.

Identify the merger, not the PR author.

When a maintainer merges another person's PR, github.event.pull_request.user.login names the author. The notice nevertheless says the PR was merged “by” that person. Use the merger's identity for this wording, or change the wording to “authored by.” (docs.github.com)

Leaving it: this matches plain-forge's merge notice, which names the PR author.

@gorandodig Understood. You’re keeping the PR-author attribution to match plain-forge’s merge notice. No change requested.

Post the failure notice before the success notice, so a failed success
post cannot report a good run as failed. Run the merge notice on
pull_request_target with no token permissions, so merged fork PRs post
too, and strip line breaks from the title.
A failed Slack post now fails only the notify job, not the deploy or
publish job or its GitHub deployment, and "Re-run failed jobs" re-posts
without running the work again. Start notices stay in the work jobs.

A failed check skipped every job that could post, so a release that
failed its checks reached Slack as nothing.

Minor · Post a Slack notice when build fails. · publish-dev-to-pypi.yml:139-160

.github/workflows/publish-dev-to-pypi.yml:139-160
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Post a Slack notice when build fails.

When build fails, publish-dev is skipped. The notify job still runs, but none of its three notice steps match. A failed dev build on main therefore produces no Slack message. The PR description says build results are posted by notify.

The checks failed step requires pre-publish-checks to be failure, and that job succeeded. The failure step requires publish-dev to be failure, and that job was skipped. The success step requires publish-dev to be success, which also does not hold. Add a step for needs.build.result == 'failure'. The three conditions are mutually exclusive, so the new step cannot overlap the others.
