Disabled Symbios gas slots were listed as available gases because ID_GAS_CONFIG parsing ignored the per-slot enabled byte at offset +5. Require that byte to be non-zero before registering non-diluent gas IDs 0-4, while retaining the existing non-zero O2/He requirement. Leave diluent IDs 5-7 on their existing path.

Cover disabled and enabled slots, repeated configurations, diluents, compacted gas and tank indices, and short records with focused synthetic parser tests. Run make check and replay both confirmed native open-circuit BIN samples; each retains the starting gas and three diluents without the disabled slots.

  • Ignore disabled non-diluent gas slots; keep diluent handling unchanged.
  • Resolve transmitter references to configured gases, including disabled-only configurations, and reject conflicting repeated configurations.
  • Add synthetic tests for gas registration, indices, tank mappings, and invalid records.

Walkthrough

The Halcyon Symbios parser retains configured gas mixes separately from exposed mixes. It resolves transmitter references against retained configurations and reports errors for conflicting or missing configurations. Synthetic tests cover gas parsing profiles and deferred resolution.

Changes

Halcyon Symbios gas configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Retain configured gas mixes
src/halcyon_symbios_parser.c
The parser retains nonzero gas configurations by ID, including disabled slots. It rejects conflicting repeated configurations and reports an error when the retained configuration capacity is reached.
Resolve transmitter gas references
src/halcyon_symbios_parser.c
When a transmitter references a gas ID that is not exposed, the parser looks for the ID in retained configurations and adds a match to the exposed mixes. It reports errors when the ID is unknown or the exposed list is full.
Check gas parsing profiles
test/test_halcyon_symbios_gases.c, test/Makefile.am
Synthetic fixtures check gas compositions, sample indices, tank mappings, pressure tank indices, deferred resolution, and error cases. The test is added to the build and test lists.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "halcyon: Ignore disabled open-circuit gas slots" matches the main change in the changeset. The PR changes Symbios ID_GAS_CONFIG parsing so non-diluent gas IDs 0-4 register only when the per-slot enabled byte is non-zero. The raw summary also describes retaining disabled configurations and resolving transmitter references to disabled gases, which is related to the same behavior. The title is specific and concise, and it names the affected parser (halcyon) and the concept (disabled open-circuit gas slots). It does not cover the follow-up transmitter resolution change or the new tests, which is expected for a title.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 6 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

636-636: Data Integrity & Integration

Compare the enable-byte layout across firmware versions.

If pre-V2.31.07 records leave data[offset + 5] at zero, this condition can drop active OC gases. A later transmitter record for that gas can then return DC_STATUS_DATAFORMAT. Compare records before and after V2.31.07, and preserve the previous behavior for formats without this flag.

Copilot review overview

7 open issues
What changed in this PR

This PR stops disabled Symbios open-circuit gas slots from being listed as available gases. The parser now requires the per-slot enabled byte at offset +5 to be non-zero for non-diluent gas IDs 0-4. Diluent IDs 5-7 keep their existing path, and synthetic parser tests cover the new behavior.

Changes:

  • src/halcyon_symbios_parser.c: Adds an NGAS_SLOTS constant and requires data[offset + 5] != 0 for gas IDs below it, while keeping the non-zero O2/He requirement.
  • test/test_halcyon_symbios_gases.c: Adds synthetic parser tests for disabled and enabled slots, repeated configurations, diluents, compacted indices, and a short record.
  • test/Makefile.am: Registers the new test program in check_PROGRAMS and TESTS.
File Description
src/halcyon_symbios_parser.c Skips disabled GAS1-GAS5 slots during gas configuration parsing, leaving diluents unchanged.
test/test_halcyon_symbios_gases.c Adds focused synthetic tests for enabled/disabled slots, duplicates, diluents, indices, and short records.
test/Makefile.am Builds and runs the new test under make check.

On the firmware-version concern: I looked for a version boundary where the Symbios gas-config format might have omitted or always zeroed the per-slot enabled byte, but I can't find any such version referenced anywhere in this repository, its tests, or available documentation, and the ID_GAS_CONFIG record length is strictly validated at a fixed 8 bytes for every log version this parser handles (there's no version-conditional handling for this record, unlike the existing GF_DATA/GF_INFO workaround). The fix has been validated against two confirmed real open-circuit samples as noted in the PR description. I don't have evidence of an affected older firmware generation to test against, so I'm not introducing speculative version gating here.

🟡 Changes recommended

A moderate parser defect leaves tanks whose transmitter references only a disabled gas slot with an unknown gas mix, because the fallback is gated on an enabled slot being present.

1 open issue

In code that hasn't changed since last review

Medium severity Run transmitter fallback when no gas slot is enabled

src/halcyon_symbios_parser.c:483

The transmitter fallback for disabled slots never runs when no enabled gas slot exists. The gate on line 476 only passes when have_gasmix is set, and that happens only for an enabled slot (line 705). A transmitter that references a disabled slot is then skipped, and its tank keeps DC_GASMIX_UNKNOWN. Gate on any configured gas instead, as in the suggested fix. This also makes an unknown transmitter gas ID fail in that case, as it already does when an enabled gas exists.

🔵 Needs a closer look

Two nit-level findings, a stale test comment and a redundant parser check, passed the severity filter but were omitted from the published review, so a human reviewer needs to evaluate them directly.

Signed-off-by: Michael Keller <github@ike.ch>
A gas slot that is disabled in its ID_GAS_CONFIG record is no longer
registered in the exposed gas list, but a subsequent ID_GAS_TRANSMITTER
record can still reference that same id if the slot is actually in use.
Previously this lookup failed with DC_STATUS_DATAFORMAT because only the
exposed gas list was searched.

Retain every configured gas slot, enabled or not, in a separate lookup
table. When a transmitter record references an id that is not yet
exposed, resolve it from that table and add it to the exposed list at
that point, instead of rejecting the record.

Add a synthetic test covering a disabled slot later referenced by a
transmitter, confirming it resolves and becomes visible only once
referenced.

Signed-off-by: Michael Keller <github@ike.ch>
The retained-configuration table added to resolve disabled gas slots
referenced by a transmitter only recorded the first value seen for each
id, silently keeping it even if a later ID_GAS_CONFIG record reported a
different oxygen or helium percentage for the same id. This dropped the
consistency check that the exposed gas list already applies, so a
genuinely conflicting (and potentially corrupt) retained configuration
could be exposed through a transmitter reference instead of being
rejected.

Validate repeated retained configurations the same way the exposed gas
list does, and reject the record with DC_STATUS_DATAFORMAT on a
mismatch. Add a synthetic test covering a disabled slot reconfigured
with a different oxygen percentage before being referenced.

Signed-off-by: Michael Keller <github@ike.ch>
The ID_GAS_TRANSMITTER resolution block was gated on have_gasmix, which
was only set once an enabled (or diluent) gas had been registered in the
exposed gas list. If every configured gas slot is disabled and none of
them had been exposed yet, a transmitter referencing one of them skipped
the whole block, leaving its tank's gas mix as DC_GASMIX_UNKNOWN instead
of being resolved through the retained configuration added to handle
this case.

Gate on ngasconfig instead, since every valid gas configuration, enabled
or not, is already recorded there. This removes the now-unused
have_gasmix flag.

Add a synthetic test where the only configured gas is disabled and is
referenced by a transmitter before any gas is otherwise registered.

Signed-off-by: Michael Keller <github@ike.ch>
Address several review nits in test_halcyon_symbios_gases.c:
- Replace the unexplained magic number 7 used to select the Symbios
Handset descriptor with a named HANDSET_MODEL_SYMBIOS constant.
- Compare oxygen and helium fractions with a small tolerance instead of
==, so the checks stay valid if the parser's conversion changes.
- Document how the linkage fixture's expected gas count of 8 and its
expected sample indices {0, 1, 3, 7} are derived, including which
registered ids are enabled versus diluents that skip the enable
  check.
