values.yaml set dcgm-exporter.nodeSelector to the GKE accelerator label. Helm merges maps, so the nodeSelector: {} in values-aws.yaml and values-aks.yaml could not remove it, and values-ack.yaml got it on top of its own labels: the exporter scheduled on no node outside GKE. The default is now empty, and the AWS and AKS overlays select the sie.superlinked.com/node-type=gpu label their terraform modules set on GPU nodes.

The AKS overlay also tolerates the spot taint, as the workers do. The README upgrade notes cover --reuse-values, which keeps the old default selector, and GKE releases installed without values-gke.yaml.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Configuration Updates
    • On AKS and AWS, DCGM Exporter now selects GPU nodes using the GPU node-type label.
    • On AKS, it also tolerates the NVIDIA GPU and Azure spot-node taints.
    • The default configuration no longer selects nodes using the GKE accelerator label; without a cloud-specific overlay, no node selector is set.
    • Cloud-specific configurations retain their GPU node selectors, including the ACK and GKE settings.
  • Documentation
    • Upgrade notes explain how to apply the cloud-specific selector when upgrading existing installations.
  • Tests
    • Added checks for cloud-specific node selection, the default selector, and AKS taint tolerations.

Walkthrough

The default DCGM Exporter node selector is empty. AWS and AKS values select GPU nodes by label, and AKS values add tolerations for GPU and spot-node taints. Helm render tests check selectors across cloud overlays and the default configuration. Upgrade notes describe the changed default and available Helm options.

The default selector is empty. AWS and AKS select nodes labeled sie.superlinked.com/node-type: gpu; AKS also tolerates the NVIDIA GPU and Azure spot-node taints. Render tests check selectors for AWS, AKS, ACK, GKE, and default rendering. The README describes upgrade options for the changed default.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Low · previous review fe536

The exporter no longer carries the GKE node label outside GKE, and the AWS and AKS overlays select GPU nodes by label. The remaining risk is incomplete upgrade guidance. GKE users doing a reset upgrade must pass values-gke.yaml or set the node selector. Users with custom GPU labels need to know how to replace the whole selector map. These are documentation fixes and do not need a code change.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 8c8e4

The change corrects cross-cloud scheduling while keeping the exporter disabled by default. Enabling it without a cloud overlay now removes the shared GPU-node restriction. Effective exporter privileges, provisioning-label guarantees, and production upgrade behavior remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly affected boundary is exporter node eligibility within the deployment cluster. The configuration change does not itself establish additional IAM, secret, or host privileges; determining whether wider eligibility expands sensitive access requires the unavailable exporter pod specification.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — AWS and AKS placement relies on the authority assigning the generic GPU node label. The overlays name Terraform GPU pools as its producer, but render assertions verify only the consumer selector, not label provenance or exclusivity.

The title names the main change: dcgm-exporter scheduling on GPU nodes outside GKE. The title is specific and matches the changeset. The 'fix(helm)' prefix follows a conventional-commit style and is accurate for this change.

Thanks for tracking this down. A nodeSelector: {} overlay cannot clear a key from the chart default, so the exporter never scheduled outside GKE, and moving the GPU labels into each cloud overlay fixes that. The render test covers each overlay and CI is green. Approving.

Optional follow-ups:

  • Installs that enable the exporter without a cloud overlay now schedule it on every node, including CPU nodes. A note next to dcgm-exporter.nodeSelector in values.yaml asking those users to set a GPU node label would help.
  • The AWS and AKS selectors rely on labels the Terraform modules set, so a short comment that clusters built another way should override the selector would help those users.
  • The PR title is cut off with an ellipsis.

Thanks again. #809 just merged and also appended tests to the end of tools/ci/tests/test_helm_render.py, so this branch now conflicts there. Could you merge origin/main and keep both sets of tests? Nothing else conflicts. I will re-approve once CI is green.

Document the stored-selector caveat and use a plain -f upgrade.

For a release installed with values-gke.yaml, Helm stores the GKE selector in the release values. In Helm 3.14, --reset-then-reuse-values merges those stored values into the new values. The AWS and AKS overlays add sie.superlinked.com/node-type: gpu, but they do not remove cloud.google.com/gke-accelerator-count. Kubernetes requires all nodeSelector entries to match, so the exporter can remain unscheduled on the target cloud.

A plain -f upgrade without a reuse flag removes the stale selector, but it also requires all other desired release values to be supplied again. Update the guidance to state this explicitly; the custom-label example does not solve the stored-selector case.

Correct the selector override for upgrades.

If a release was installed with this overlay, an upgrade using --reset-then-reuse-values merges the saved sie.superlinked.com/node-type: gpu selector back into the JSON map. Nodes with only the custom label then do not match, so the exporter collects no metrics. The AKS example has the same issue. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Document how to remove the saved selector, such as exporting and cleaning the release values before upgrading with --reset-values.

Based on learnings, custom GPU labels are supported through dcgm-exporter.nodeSelector.

values.yaml set dcgm-exporter.nodeSelector to the GKE accelerator label. Helm
merges maps, so the `nodeSelector: {}` in values-aws.yaml and values-aks.yaml
could not remove it, and values-ack.yaml got it on top of its own labels: the
exporter scheduled on no node outside GKE. The default is now empty, and the
AWS and AKS overlays select the sie.superlinked.com/node-type=gpu label their
terraform modules set on GPU nodes.

The AKS overlay also tolerates the spot taint, as the workers do. The README
upgrade notes cover --reuse-values, which keeps the old default selector, and
GKE releases installed without values-gke.yaml.
