[SDK] Fix x402 retries of Request-owned bodies - #9048
120 focused wrapper/schema/native-fetch tests pass on Node 20.20.2, 22.23.1, and 24.22.2. The six original body-replay regressions fail against the unchanged upstream base; four native wire-referrer regressions fail on the previous PR head under Node 24.
SDK and its engine/insight workspace dependencies build successfully; pnpm fix, pnpm lint, and a focused test type check pass in the selected workspace checkout.
Two independent local reviewers checked this exact signed commit and ran separate native-fetch/loopback tests (results recorded locally).
Request.clone() tees the upload and can buffer an unread branch. This change is intended for bounded Request-owned bodies. Arbitrary streams supplied through init.body still need a replayable body strategy.
The upstream test global setup starts external RPC/Anvil services; these targeted tests ran with an offline configuration instead. No real payment settlement was performed.
The effective-header fix is a separate change. Both PRs target main independently. Their callback declaration overlaps; after either is merged, the other will need a rebase. The earlier combined check covered the original published heads.
When applying both fixes, construct the replay Request from the normalized initialInit, keep the fallback init lazy, and keep body-retry referrer metadata out of the URL/bodyless fallback options.
Node and cancellation follow-up
Native Node 20/22/24 fetch retains a dispatcher supplied through init on the constructed retry Request. A separate Node 18 check reproduced loss of the fetch-only dispatcher, so the cached dispatcher is now forwarded explicitly across runtimes without duplicate accessor reads. Native Node 18 CommonJS v1/v2 HTTP flows pass without flags; the getter is read exactly once per dispatch. Node 24 also lost the wire Referer on the paid retry, so the retry metadata now preserves the effective referrer fields. New tests abort while payment signing is paused and verify that only the initial request reaches the merchant, and check cleanup if a late dispatcher getter throws.
Two fresh source-only independent local reviewers checked the final follow-up commit before push.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Fixed x402 payment retries for eligible requests with their own bodies, allowing the body to be replayed when a payment is required.
Preserved request options, including explicit referrers and Node fetch dispatchers, during payment retries.
Requests with an init.body override continue to use that body; it must be replayable for a retry.
Improved handling of failed initial requests, payment-signing errors, payment-limit failures, and unused retry bodies.

Walkthrough
wrapFetchWithPayment clones eligible Request-owned bodies before the initial fetch. It uses the clone for a payment retry and cancels unused copies. The retry preserves referrer options and forwards Node fetch dispatchers. Tests cover replay behavior and error handling.

The wrapper clones eligible Request bodies before dispatch and uses the clone for a payment retry. Retry construction forwards referrer settings and any dispatcher from init.

Tests cover v1 and v2 retries, Request options, body overrides, cancellation, failures, and cleanup of unused retry copies.

Title check
The title clearly identifies an SDK fix for x402 retries involving Request-owned bodies. It is concise and directly related to the main change.

Explanation
Issue #9046 is the only active direct link. Its coding requirements are: (a) retry a Request-owned, bounded body after the first fetch consumes it; (b) keep effective Request options, caller cancellation, explicit init.body overrides, and the __is402Retry marker; (c) release unused retry copies on non-402 responses and errors; (d) add x402 v1/v2 regression tests; (e) document the bounded-body limit.
Evidence at head c544bb4, diffed against merge base 940b374:
wrapFetchWithPayment clones an eligible input Request before the first dispatch when the body is non-null, unused, and unlocked. The clone is passed to the retry path.
The retry builds new Request(retryRequest, paymentInit). It sets the payment header and Access-Control-Expose-Headers, and it keeps __is402Retry: true.
Explicit init.body values are honored because init is passed to the Request constructor.
Unused copies are canceled without awaiting in the outer finally and in the inner finally. Cancellation failures are caught. Request-construction failures reach the finally blocks, so copies are released.
The new dispatcher and referrer handling keeps effective fetch options on the Request-based retry. Without it, the retry would lose the dispatcher and the wire Referer. These fixes support the retained-options requirement and do not add a separate feature.
Tests are described in the PR summary: fetchWithPayment.requestBody.test.ts (v1/v2 body replay, accessor counts, options, cancellation, overrides, non-402, signing and maxValue failures, initial transport errors, invalid-option cleanup) and fetchWithPayment.node.test.ts (dispatcher and referrer handling, abort during paused signing, getter rejection cleanup).
The JSDoc in fetchWithPayment.ts states the bounded-body limit and the replayable-init.body requirement.
Residual uncertainty: I did not re-read the test files in this check. Test coverage rests on the PR summary and the previous PASS. The source diff itself shows the required behavior.

Explanation
Changed files are the x402 wrapper, its tests, a patch changeset, and the JSDoc. The source changes stay on the x402 retry path: Request-body cloning, retry Request construction, the existing __is402Retry marker, and Node dispatcher and referrer retention on that retry. These changes support requirements of #9046 that effective Request options are kept and that the retry reaches the merchant. No public declarations change, per the changeset summary. The effective-header fix named in the PR description is not in this diff. No unrelated product behavior or unrelated files appear in the reviewed scope.

Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 4 functions across 3 files. This test aborts only after both dispatches complete. It would not detect a regression where an abort after the initial 402 is ignored and the paid retry still dispatches. Pause payment generation or the first 402 response, abort the controller at that point, and assert the wrapper rejects with the abort and the merchant receives only the initial request.
