[OMNIML-6429] [3/3] Move hf_ptq's VLM-wrapper and Whisper calibration behind model hooks - #3225
Part 3 of 3 of the series that makes examples/hf_ptq free of named-model branches, on top of #3224. What is left in the example is the code that tests for "whisper" and for a Nemotron architecture in several places, and the Nemotron VL calibration forward the example carries itself. This part moves both behind four optional per-model hooks in modelopt.torch.models.hf, which the example calls without knowing which model type provides them, and moves the modules that provide them next to the model.
Was in the example
Now
is_nemotron_vl ("nemotron" in the architectures) and examples/hf_ptq/nemotron_vl_calib.py
vlm_wrapper and no_auto_device_map on NemotronH_Nano_VL_V2, Llama_Nemotron_Nano_VL, nemotron_h_omni and nemotron_parse, and a forward_calibration_batch hook for all but nemotron_parse; the file moves to modelopt/torch/models/nemotron_h_nano_vl_v2/calibration.py (git mv; the calibration forward is unchanged, the hook wrapper around it is new)
model_type == "whisper" in five places (processor, speech calibration data, batch-probe sample shape, preview input key, preview decoding)
hooks load_calibration_processor, make_calibration_dataloader, calibration_sample_input in modelopt/torch/models/whisper/calibration.py; the preview takes input_ids when the batch has them, else input_features
PTQSpec (from #3224) gains vlm_wrapper and no_auto_device_map, and a model type may now list several plugin modules in hf._PLUGINS; two that define the same hook are refused. Two device-map precedences are kept exactly, which is why there are two fields: no_auto_device_map (Nemotron VL) still yields to an explicit --use_seq_device_map, since users shard these wrappers; no_device_map (T5, BART) yields to nothing.
The example's Nemotron VL support was written for this wrapper: nemotron_vl_calib.py runs a calibration forward in place of the wrapper's own forward(), which calls torch.distributed.get_rank() unconditionally and assumes past_key_values, and the example's tests name the type. The example found it by "nemotron" in the architecture of any multimodal model; the registry needs the exact type. The spec carries vlm_wrapper and no_auto_device_map, and the package holds the moved forward behind the forward_calibration_batch hook.
The old "nemotron" match gave it the VLM-wrapper handling, which its remote code needs: generate() takes pixel_values first, so the generic token-id preview would hand it token ids, and forward() squeezes image_flags, which a plain image batch does not carry. The spec carries vlm_wrapper and no_auto_device_map, and the type maps to the same forward_calibration_batch hook as NemotronH_Nano_VL_V2.
nemotron_parse
Nemotron-Parse (remote code)
The example names it: its comments and a test cover its encoder-decoder calibration batch, and export detects its architecture. The old "nemotron" match gave it the VLM-wrapper handling, which it needs: its main input is pixel_values, so the generic token-id preview would hand its vision encoder token ids, and text-only calibration reaches only its decoder, never the cross-attention. The spec carries vlm_wrapper and no_auto_device_map. It has no calibration hook, since its batch keeps the plain forward.
whisper
Whisper
The example tested model_type == "whisper" in five places. The package holds the three hooks that replace them, in whisper/calibration.py. Its spec records only the transformers floor, since every package in the registry has a specs.py (models README).
nemotron_h_omni, already in the registry, gets the same ptq_spec and calibration hook: the old architecture match covered it too, and the moved forward already handles its layout.
Behavior differences (deliberate)
Four model types get the VLM-wrapper defaults, NemotronH_Nano_VL_V2, Llama_Nemotron_Nano_VL, nemotron_h_omni and nemotron_parse, where the old test matched any multimodal architecture containing "nemotron". README footnote 13 names them.
Plain InternVL wrappers (internvl_chat) take the generic load, calibration and preview. Under --calib_with_images their batches go through the plain forward, where the old code gave any wrapper with img_context_token_id the InternVL-style calibration forward; no code or test named that model type.
The generation preview takes input_ids when the batch has them, else input_features (it was Whisper by name), and decodes through the processor's tokenizer when there is no tokenizer.
Left out on purpose: dataset_utils.model_type_is_enc_dec, export.model_utils.is_multimodal_model (a Nemotron-Parse name test) and the /no_think prompt in vlm_utils are library code with the same smell, and are not touched here.
The series
Merge in this order. Each part builds, carries its own tests and passes CI without the later ones. The whole change as one diff is the draft #3217, for reference only and not for merge.

Both runs complete. The base logs "Nemotron VL model detected", this branch "VLM wrapper detected"; both calibrate on image-text pairs by default. The exported checkpoints are byte-identical: 32 files, 866 of 866 tensors equal. Neither prints a preview: the text-only preview cannot run for this model, and the image preview needs examples/hf_ptq/images, which is not in the repository (the same on main)
Whisper large-v3, transformers 5.3.0, real peoples_speech calibration audio (decoded with datasets 3.6, which needs no torchcodec)
Both runs complete. The transcripts before and after quantization and the exported weights are byte-identical. The only file difference is the order of the two exclude_modules entries in encoder/config.json, which the TensorRT-LLM exporter collects in a set

Blocked on the base and on this branch alike, before any changed code: the checkpoint's remote code does not load under transformers 5.x ('Llama_Nemotron_Nano_VL' object has no attribute 'all_tied_weights_keys'). Its handling is checked at the config level (row above)

HF PTQ now uses model-type specifications and hooks for calibration, preview, and model loading. The changes add Whisper calibration support, register Nemotron VL model specifications, and route VLM-wrapper behavior through a general flag.
Changes: HF model-type calibration and PTQ
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Hook dispatch and model specifications modelopt/torch/models/hf.py, modelopt/torch/models/specs.py, modelopt/torch/models/{llama_nemotron_nano_vl,nemotron_h_nano_vl_v2,nemotron_h_omni,nemotron_parse,whisper}/*, modelopt/torch/models/README.md, modelopt/torch/models/__init__.py, tests/unit/torch/models/test_hf_hooks.py, tests/unit/torch/models/test_ptq_specs.py
The hook dispatcher resolves hooks across multiple plugins and rejects duplicate definitions. Model specifications register Whisper and Nemotron VLM types and define VLM-wrapper and device-map settings.
Whisper and Nemotron calibration hooks modelopt/torch/models/whisper/*, modelopt/torch/models/nemotron_h_nano_vl_v2/calibration.py, tests/unit/torch/models/test_whisper_calibration.py, tests/unit/torch/models/test_nemotron_vl_calibration.py
Whisper hooks load a processor, create speech calibration data, and provide sample input. Nemotron VL V2 adds a wrapper-forward hook. Tests cover both hook implementations.
HF PTQ calibration, preview, and loading examples/hf_ptq/*, tests/examples/hf_ptq/*, tests/_test_utils/examples/hf_ptq_example_utils.py
HF PTQ uses model-type hooks for calibration data and sample inputs, and uses the VLM-wrapper flag for image calibration and previews. Model loading reads device-map behavior from the PTQ specification. Tests cover the updated calibration, preview, and loading paths.

Review comments at @examples/hf_ptq/hf_ptq.py:
- Line 453: Update the PTQSpec image-calibration configuration and the
calibration decision that currently relies on vlm_wrapper: add a separate
setting for models requiring image calibration by default, and enable it for
Nemotron-Parse so token-only calibration supplies pixel_values. Keep vlm_wrapper
unset for Nemotron-Parse and preserve its wrapper-specific preview and
language-model-reinsertion behavior; retain the --calib_with_images option for
users to request image calibration explicitly.
Review comments at @tests/examples/hf_ptq/test_hf_ptq_model_type.py:
- Around line 243-245: Add a brief comment immediately before the in-function
WhisperProcessor and calibration imports explaining that they remain inside the
test because Transformers is an optional dependency; leave the imports and their
behavior unchanged.

Bot review (bedrock-claude-opus-5-5) — DM the bot to share feedback.
Nudge: the refactor is mechanically faithful, but restricting VLM-wrapper handling to three registered model types drops support for other Nemotron/InternVL wrappers, and the owner needs to decide whether that is acceptable.
Needs action:
Confirm what happens to Llama_Nemotron_Nano_VL (Llama-3.1-Nemotron-Nano-VL) and other wrappers that have img_context_token_id. They used to go through safe_nemotron_vl_forward under --calib_with_images. They now go through full_model(**call_kwargs), and an InternVL-style forward without image_flags likely fails. Either register those types in hf._PLUGINS and give them a ptq_spec, or show that the plain forward runs.
Update footnote 13 in examples/hf_ptq/README.md ("Nemotron VL automatically calibrates with image-text pairs") to name the three model types that still get this default.
Replace if processor is not None: pass in hf_ptq.load_model with if processor is None and args.calib_with_images: (or similar). The empty branch reads like dead code.
Optional: use the LICENSE_HEADER year (2026) in the new nemotron_h_nano_vl_v2/, nemotron_parse/, whisper/ and test files.
No action needed:
The design extends the existing hf._PLUGINS/_HOOKS dispatcher and PTQSpec rather than adding a parallel system.
The device-map order (no_auto_device_map, then --use_seq_device_map, then no_device_map) and the Whisper processor, dataloader, preview and batch-probe paths match the old code.
The test edits are justified: the removed is_nemotron_vl monkeypatches went away with the function, and the loop-dispatch tests moved to test_example_utils.py with the same assertions.
Llama_Nemotron_Nano_VL is restored in 3db17b3, with the spec (vlm_wrapper, no_auto_device_map) and the forward_calibration_batch route it had before. Its remote code fails on the generic path: generate() takes pixel_values first, so the token-id preview hands it token ids, and forward() squeezes image_flags, which a plain image batch does not carry. On the Hub config of Llama-3.1-Nemotron-Nano-VL-8B-V1, main's is_nemotron_vl returns True, and this branch now gives it the same handling. Plain InternVL wrappers (internvl_chat) stay out of the registry: main reached them only through img_context_token_id under --calib_with_images, and no code or test names that model type. The description lists this.
README footnote 13 now names the four model types that calibrate on image-text pairs by default, and says that other VLMs need --calib_with_images (5529d28).
The empty pass branch is gone: load_model tests processor is None in the two branches that need setup (b67d7ff).
The files this PR adds carry 2026 in their license headers (43d8d49). The two moved files keep theirs.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bot review (bedrock-claude-opus-5-5) — DM the bot to share feedback.
Nudge: all four concerns from the last review are fixed. One deliberate behaviour change is left for the owner to accept: plain internvl_chat wrappers no longer get the safe calibration forward.
Needs action:
Confirm that dropping internvl_chat from the safe forward is acceptable. On base, any wrapper with img_context_token_id went through safe_nemotron_vl_forward under --calib_with_images. Now it gets full_model(**call_kwargs), and InternVL's remote forward squeezes image_flags, which the batch doesn't carry. To keep the old routing without a PTQSpec, add one line to hf._PLUGINS: "internvl_chat": "nemotron_h_nano_vl_v2.calibration".
Run Whisper, Llama-Nemotron-Nano-VL and Nemotron-Parse end to end on GPU before the series merges, and record the results under Testing. So far they are checked only at config level or with synthetic inputs.
No action needed:
✔️ Resolved since the last review: Llama_Nemotron_Nano_VL is registered again with the spec and the calibration hook, footnote 13 now names the four types, the empty pass branch is replaced by processor is None checks, and the new files carry 2026 headers.
The edits to existing tests are justified. The is_nemotron_vl monkeypatches were removed along with the function. The dispatch tests moved to test_example_utils.py with the same assertions. The other edits are renames.
The example loaded a processor, built calibration data, probed the batch size and decoded the
preview by testing for "whisper" and for a Nemotron architecture, and it carried the Nemotron VL
calibration forward itself. Those become optional per-model hooks in modelopt.torch.models.hf,
which the example calls without knowing which model type provides them:
- forward_calibration_batch: the Nemotron VL calibration forward, moved from
examples/hf_ptq/nemotron_vl_calib.py to modelopt/torch/models/nemotron_h_nano_vl_v2/
calibration.py. The forward is unchanged; the hook around it declines an encoder-decoder
model, and a wrapper that has extract_feature but no img_context_token_id.
- load_calibration_processor, make_calibration_dataloader and calibration_sample_input: the
Whisper processor, speech calibration data and batch-probe sample, in
modelopt/torch/models/whisper/calibration.py.
A model type may now list several plugin modules in hf._PLUGINS (two that define the same hook
are refused), and PTQSpec gains vlm_wrapper and no_auto_device_map. no_auto_device_map still
yields to an explicit --use_seq_device_map, since users shard these wrappers; no_device_map stays
the strong one. Specs: nemotron_h_nano_vl_v2 (new), nemotron_h_omni and whisper (new).
Differences from the old checks:
- Only NemotronH_Nano_VL_V2 and nemotron_h_omni get the VLM-wrapper defaults (image-text
calibration, the wrapper preview, no automatic device map). Llama-Nemotron-Nano-VL,
Nemotron-Parse and plain InternVL wrappers take the generic path.
- The generation preview takes input_ids when the batch has them, else input_features, and
decodes through the processor's tokenizer when there is no tokenizer; it keyed on "whisper"
by name.
- Log wording: "VLM wrapper" replaces "Nemotron VL".

The models README and the spec's docstring said the package name lowercases the model type.
Lowercasing NemotronH_Nano_VL_V2 gives nemotronh_nano_vl_v2; the package is nemotron_h_nano_vl_v2,
a snake_case name like nemotron_h's. No code derives a package from a model type: the registry,
hf._PLUGINS and the imports name it explicitly, as transformers maps EvollaModel to its evolla
package.
Signed-off-by: Shengliang Xu <shengliangx@nvidia.com>
…file
The hf_ptq fixture imports the example, which imports transformers at module
level, so every test in this file already needs transformers, and the
neighbouring example tests import it at the top. The function-local imports
and their importorskip had no reason to stay.
Signed-off-by: Shengliang Xu <shengliangx@nvidia.com>
The old example names Nemotron-Parse: export detects its architecture, and the
example's comments and a test cover its encoder-decoder calibration batch. Its
"nemotron" architecture gave it the Nemotron VL handling: image-text
calibration by default, the wrapper preview and no automatic device map.
Without a spec it took the generic path, where its forward raises without
pixel_values, so a run without --calib_with_images failed. The spec restores
the old handling. It has no calibration hook: its batch keeps the plain
forward.
Signed-off-by: Shengliang Xu <shengliangx@nvidia.com>
The old example matched "nemotron" in the architecture of any multimodal
model, which reached Llama-3.1-Nemotron-Nano-VL-8B (model type
Llama_Nemotron_Nano_VL): image-text calibration by default, the wrapper
preview, no automatic device map and the InternVL-style calibration forward.
On the generic path its remote code fails: generate() takes pixel_values
first, so the token-id preview hands it token ids, and forward() squeezes
image_flags, which a plain image batch does not carry. The spec and the
hf._PLUGINS route come back as they were before the spec cut. Plain InternVL
wrappers (internvl_chat), which the old code reached only through
img_context_token_id under --calib_with_images, stay out.
Signed-off-by: Shengliang Xu <shengliangx@nvidia.com>
Footnote 13 said Nemotron VL calibrates with image-text pairs, which the
example decided by "nemotron" in the architecture. It now goes by model
type, so the footnote names the four types that keep the default and says
that other VLMs need --calib_with_images.
Signed-off-by: Shengliang Xu <shengliangx@nvidia.com>
The processor a model type brings is the only branch that needs no setup,
so test for its absence instead of keeping a branch that only passes.
Signed-off-by: Shengliang Xu <shengliangx@nvidia.com>
LICENSE_HEADER carries 2026; the new files copied 2024 from older modules. The two moved files keep their headers.

Restore Nemotron Omni coverage in the model-type registry.
The published Nemotron-3 Nano Omni checkpoint uses model_type="NemotronH_Nano_Omni_Reasoning_V3" and has a vision config. The previous architecture check selected Nemotron VLM behavior for that config. No new PTQSpec or calibration plugin registers this type. Consequently, vlm_wrapper is false here: a default run loses image-text calibration, and the loader also loses its no-auto-device-map setting. Register this exact model type and its calibration hook before removing the architecture fallback. (huggingface.co)
As per coding guidelines, “Keep public API changes minimal and backward compatible.”

Qualify the image-calibration default.
This footnote says the four model types use image-text calibration by default. load_model does not enable that default for FSDP2 or AutoQuantize. State those exceptions and tell FSDP2 users to pass --calib_with_images when their model requires images. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @examples/hf_ptq/README.md at line 142:
Update the README footnote about image-text calibration defaults to state that
the default does not apply to FSDP2 or AutoQuantize. Tell FSDP2 users whose
models require images to pass --calib_with_images, while preserving the existing
model-type list and calibration guidance.

internvl_chat: confirmed as deliberate, the owner's call. The series keeps a model type when the old example or its tests name it, and nothing named internvl_chat. Main reached it only through img_context_token_id under --calib_with_images. The description lists this under behavior differences.
End-to-end GPU runs are requested on our clusters, main vs this tip, each with the example's default command: Llama-3.1-Nemotron-Nano-VL-8B-V1 and NVIDIA-Nemotron-Parse-v1.1 (fp8, with the default image-text calibration and the wrapper preview), and Whisper large-v3 (fp8, real speech calibration data). The results will go under Testing.
The end-to-end GPU runs are done. Each ran on 1 GPU at the stack's base 219b34a and at this branch f7cc01a, each run importing its own checkout, with hf_ptq.py --pyt_ckpt_path <model> --qformat fp8 --export_path <dir>:
Both complete with byte-identical exports (866 of 866 tensors equal). The base logs "Nemotron VL model detected", this branch "VLM wrapper detected"; both calibrate on image-text pairs by default
Whisper large-v3 (transformers 5.3.0, real peoples_speech audio)
Both complete. The transcripts before and after quantization and the exported weights are byte-identical
Llama-3.1-Nemotron-Nano-VL-8B-V1 (transformers 5.5.4 and 5.13.0)
Blocked on both alike, before any changed code: its remote code does not load under transformers 5.x (all_tied_weights_keys). Its handling stays checked at the config level
The Testing section of the description has the details.

Type of change: Refactor
Part 3 of 3 of the series that makes
examples/hf_ptqfree of named-model branches, on top of #3224. What is left in the example is the code that tests for"whisper"and for a Nemotron architecture in several places, and the Nemotron VL calibration forward the example carries itself. This part moves both behind four optional per-model hooks inmodelopt.torch.models.hf, which the example calls without knowing which model type provides them, and moves the modules that provide them next to the model.is_nemotron_vl("nemotron"in the architectures) andexamples/hf_ptq/nemotron_vl_calib.pyvlm_wrapperandno_auto_device_maponNemotronH_Nano_VL_V2,Llama_Nemotron_Nano_VL,nemotron_h_omniandnemotron_parse, and aforward_calibration_batchhook for all butnemotron_parse; the file moves tomodelopt/torch/models/nemotron_h_nano_vl_v2/calibration.py(git mv; the calibration forward is unchanged, the hook wrapper around it is new)model_type == "whisper"in five places (processor, speech calibration data, batch-probe sample shape, preview input key, preview decoding)load_calibration_processor,make_calibration_dataloader,calibration_sample_inputinmodelopt/torch/models/whisper/calibration.py; the preview takesinput_idswhen the batch has them, elseinput_featuresPTQSpec(from #3224) gainsvlm_wrapperandno_auto_device_map, and a model type may now list several plugin modules inhf._PLUGINS; two that define the same hook are refused. Two device-map precedences are kept exactly, which is why there are two fields:no_auto_device_map(Nemotron VL) still yields to an explicit--use_seq_device_map, since users shard these wrappers;no_device_map(T5, BART) yields to nothing.Model types this PR adds to the registry
NemotronH_Nano_VL_V2(snake_case packagenemotron_h_nano_vl_v2)nemotron_vl_calib.pyruns a calibration forward in place of the wrapper's ownforward(), which callstorch.distributed.get_rank()unconditionally and assumespast_key_values, and the example's tests name the type. The example found it by "nemotron" in the architecture of any multimodal model; the registry needs the exact type. The spec carriesvlm_wrapperandno_auto_device_map, and the package holds the moved forward behind theforward_calibration_batchhook.Llama_Nemotron_Nano_VL(snake_case packagellama_nemotron_nano_vl)generate()takespixel_valuesfirst, so the generic token-id preview would hand it token ids, andforward()squeezesimage_flags, which a plain image batch does not carry. The spec carriesvlm_wrapperandno_auto_device_map, and the type maps to the sameforward_calibration_batchhook asNemotronH_Nano_VL_V2.nemotron_parsepixel_values, so the generic token-id preview would hand its vision encoder token ids, and text-only calibration reaches only its decoder, never the cross-attention. The spec carriesvlm_wrapperandno_auto_device_map. It has no calibration hook, since its batch keeps the plain forward.whispermodel_type == "whisper"in five places. The package holds the three hooks that replace them, inwhisper/calibration.py. Its spec records only the transformers floor, since every package in the registry has aspecs.py(models README).nemotron_h_omni, already in the registry, gets the sameptq_specand calibration hook: the old architecture match covered it too, and the moved forward already handles its layout.Behavior differences (deliberate)
NemotronH_Nano_VL_V2,Llama_Nemotron_Nano_VL,nemotron_h_omniandnemotron_parse, where the old test matched any multimodal architecture containing "nemotron". README footnote 13 names them.internvl_chat) take the generic load, calibration and preview. Under--calib_with_imagestheir batches go through the plain forward, where the old code gave any wrapper withimg_context_token_idthe InternVL-style calibration forward; no code or test named that model type.input_idswhen the batch has them, elseinput_features(it was Whisper by name), and decodes through the processor's tokenizer when there is no tokenizer.Left out on purpose:
dataset_utils.model_type_is_enc_dec,export.model_utils.is_multimodal_model(a Nemotron-Parse name test) and the/no_thinkprompt invlm_utilsare library code with the same smell, and are not touched here. The series
Merge in this order. Each part builds, carries its own tests and passes CI without the later ones. The whole change as one diff is the draft #3217, for reference only and not for merge.
